ALCS May 2023 newsletter

A week of school left, unbelievable! Nine months ago the 2022-2023 school year began with all of the excitement that is generated by the possibilities that a new school year brings. Whether it is the challenges of academics or of extra- and co-curricular activities, everyone is nervous/excited as they anticipate the year.

Now, all that is left is that “final tally.” Did the 2022-2023 school year live up to the expectations everyone had in August of 2022? Are you satisfied with your grades, did you get into the college/program/job of your choice, did you get that part in the play, did you or your team win that conference championship? The list goes on and on and is specific to every student.

Reality is that for every student there were ups and there were downs, surprise successes and disappointments this year. Reality is, that is life. We all set goals and work hard to achieve those goals. Sometimes we get more than expected and sometimes not. Whether you are 5 years old or 18 years old, the real questions are what did you learn, and how can you use last year to make next year even better?

We all need to reflect on the 2022-2023 school year and celebrate. Yes, there were some ups and downs, but this was another banner year for Avon Lake staff and students across the board. Success takes a lot of forms and we can be proud of all of the accomplishments of the Class of 2023 right down to the Class of 2035.

Three weeks ago we held the In Recognition of Excellence celebration in the PAC. Graduating students with a 3.0 GPA or over were celebrated. One of the wonderful parts of this ceremony is when staff members are honored by students. From custodians to teachers to principals, students honor staff who made a difference in their school career.

I think that with a week left in the 2022-2023 school year we all need to look around and say thank you to those who helped us get better and those who helped us make it through any difficult times. As always, the school year has passed in a blur. It has been a great year for many reasons. Take a moment to honor those people who are important to you. The 2023-2024 school year will be here before we know it.

This year Avon Lake High School is working together with Lorain County Veterans to assist them in the “Reading of the Names” at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial of Lorain County, 911 N Lake St., Amherst, tomorrow (Saturday May 27) at 6 p.m. The Memorial exists to remember and honor the 98 soldiers from Lorain County who died in the service of their country in the Vietnam War. ALHS ceramics and advanced ceramics art students have created 98 personalized ceramic poppy flowers to be displayed at the Memorial over Memorial Day weekend.

Additionally, students researched each of the 98 soldiers from Lorain County that were killed in the Vietnam War. It was important that each poppy was unique and personal for the soldier and their families. Thank you students and art teacher Yvonne Craigo.

It was a clean sweep for Avon Lake in the North Coast Rotary Club’s All-District (Avon, Avon Lake and Sheffield Village) Annual 4 Way Test Essay Contest! Congratulations to the students listed below from Learwood Middle School.

Congratulations to ALHS junior Dylan Missal for earning the highest possible ACT Composite Score of 36.

About one-quarter of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score. In the U.S. high school graduating Class of 2022, only 3,376 out of 1.34 million students who took the ACT earned a top Composite Score of 36.

“Avon Lake High School places focus on obtaining strong teachers who place emphasis on academic rigor and excellence,” said Michael May, Avon Lake High School principal. “Our curriculum is designed to challenge each and every student while preparing them for success. It is important to note that students’ hard work, persistence and dedication is what puts their knowledge and skills to the test when becoming high achievers.”

The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading and science, each scored on a scale of 1–36. A student's Composite Score is the average of the four test scores.

“Earning a top score on the ACT is a remarkable achievement,” said Janet Godwin, ACT CEO. “A student’s exceptional score of 36 will provide any college or university with ample evidence of their readiness for the academic rigors that lie ahead.”

Dylan's high school activities include National Honor Society, Academic Challenge (team captain and led the team to victory at the WEWS TV 5 Academic Challenge Championship last year), Math Club and choir. Dylan also has taken piano lessons and played the piano since age five, this includes recitals and accompaniment with church choir and the ALHS chorale. He works as a page at the Avon Lake Public Library and also tutors students.

Congratulations Avon Lake High School! Winner of the 2023 Buckle Up Bowl, a student-led competition that empowers students to impact the driving habits of their classmates, friends, and family. The school had a 93 percent buckle up rate.

The Safe Communities Coalition through Lorain County Public Health works to raise awareness of buckling up through the 2023 Buckle Up Bowl. These efforts echo the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) annual reminder that seat belts save lives. NHTSA’s Click It or Ticket campaign runs from May 22 through June 4, 2023.

The Lorain County Safe Communities Coalition presented members of ALHS' SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions ) members with a certificate as the best buckled school. Members of the ALHS National Honor Society also assisted in the campaign. The students competed for most improved seat belt rate, most creative campaign, and best buckled high school in Lorain County.

Eight Lorain County high schools participated in the Buckle Up Bowl to hone safe driving behaviors; including Avon, Avon Lake, Brookside, Columbia, Keystone, Marion L. Steele, Midview and Wellington.

Seat belts save lives and reduce injury. In 2022, 746 unbelted-related crashes occurred in Lorain County. A seat belt is the best way to protect yourself from injury and death in a crash.

Behaviors become habits when reinforced with education, policies, and enforcement.

The Avon Lake City Schools will once again be offering a “Jump Start” program to help students strengthen necessary skills to begin the 2023-2024 school year with a head start!

This program will be an English Language Arts and Math skills based program for students entering grades K-8 and will be content specific for grades 9-12.

Please note the purpose of the program is to cover some basic skills to help students be successful in the grade level/courses for next school year. This is not meant as a substitute for extended year services offered by the special education department or for any credit recovery programs. There will also be a social-emotional component for students.

SCHEDULE: Grades K-8 at Troy Intermediate School

Monday through Friday, Aug. 7-17, 2023 (last day is Thursday, Aug. 17)

8:30 to 11:15 a.m.

Grades 9-12 at Avon Lake High School

Honors Algebra II Aug. 15-17 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Honors Geometry Aug. 15-17 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Algebra II Aug. 15-17 from 9 to 11 a.m.

Geometry Aug. 15-17 from 9 to 11 a.m.

Practical Writing Class: Aug. 7-10 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Learn how to write and organize for various audiences and formats.

Stage to Screen: July 31-Aug. 3 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Exploring contemporary plays and their film counterparts.

There is no charge for the program and a daily snack will be provided.

Students in grades K-8 may also have a short recess break, weather permitting.

LOCATION: All classes for grades K-8 will be at Troy Intermediate School.

High school classes will be held at Avon Lake High School.

• Additional information will be sent to participants before the program begins on August 7th.

ATTENDANCE:

• Students are encouraged to attend each session.
• Daily attendance will be taken.

DISCIPLINE:

Students are expected to comply with the Avon Lake City Schools Code of Conduct. Any violation of the code may result in removal from the program.

Right now, the only slight difference in the two Eaglets that the eagle watchers can spot is that #1 has a very dark top of its head.
#2 has just a few white baby feathers still on the top of its head.
They are only a day apart in age.

The Eaglets are now 7 weeks old. They will soon be learning to fly!
