Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run is coming to Westfield for another spring season! Registration is open to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students. At Girls on the Run, you will make new friends, unleash your confidence, celebrate what makes you unique, build physical and social-emotional health, complete a celebratory 5K... and have fun! Check out this video for a closer look at Girls on the Run!
Practices will be Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:35 to 5:00 pm starting on Monday, March 10th. The season ends with an exciting 5K sometime in mid-May. More details to come!
Kids and volunteers must be registered by March 3rd. This year the program fee is dependent on household income. As always, families can request financial assistance when registering. Head to www.gotrchicago.org for a breakdown of fees. Use this link to register today! Our team is limited to a certain number of spots, so please sign up at your earliest convenience. Registration is required to be a part of the team! We follow the Girls on the Run protocol.
We are also looking for volunteers to help with practices and preparation (ex: buying and delivering snacks). No running experience is necessary. We just need positive people to help coach the team and motivate them to reach their goals! If this is your first time volunteering for GOTR, there will be some training requirements for the organization. Let us know if you are interested! If you have any questions please reach out to Mrs. Spino, Miss Soukup, or Miss Yurcus.
All schools will be closed January 20 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day
All CCSD 89 schools and the district office will be closed on Monday, January 20, for Martin Luther King Jr., Day. All CCSD 89 buildings will re-open on a regular schedule on Tuesday, January 21.
Make sure your contact info is up to date
When school buildings need to close due to extreme weather, information will be released through a phone message, as well as the district’s website (www.ccsd89.org) and Facebook page (facebook.com/CCSD89). The district’s messaging system uses contact info supplied by guardians, so it is important you contact the school secretary and update your records if they have changed. Even when school is open, students should dress for the cold. Students will continue to go outside for recess as long as the weather remains above 10 degrees.
Spots still available for WatchDOGS
Dads, granddads, uncles, step-dads and adult brothers . . . this is your chance to volunteer at Westfield! Sign up for WatchDOGS for second semester.
WATCH D.O.G.S. ® is an innovative program being used by schools across America which helps them to be positively impacted by the committed involvement of fathers and father-figures in their students' lives. Our goal is to have you spend at least one morning or afternoon this year at the school to be a positive male role model and to provide an extra set of eyes and ears.

Winter BESS administration
Community Consolidated School District 89 is committed to helping all students grow academically while also developing life skills that will help them be successful adults. In order to better measure students’ ability to manage emotions and make good decisions, CCSD 89 students in third through eighth grades participated in the Behavioral and Emotional Screening System (commonly known as BESS) in September, and they will do it again in February.
The BESS screener will take students less than 10 minutes to complete. Students are asked to indicate whether they never, sometimes, often, or always agree with 28 different statements. Examples of the statements include “I’m happy with who I am” and “I’m good at making decisions.”
BESS is not a tool for making a diagnosis and there is no grade associated with it. BESS will give the school data about how your child internalizes risk, self regulates, and establishes good relationships. This data will be paired with in-class observations to help track student growth over time. If the BESS screener shows any immediate concern for your student’s emotional health, a social worker will reach out to you by phone and discuss ways to support you and your student.
Students will be doing BESS during the following weeks:
3rd grade: Feb 10-14
5th grade: Feb 17-21
4th grade: Feb 24-28
