North Point Middle School
October 2024 Newsletter
October 2024
Dear North Point Middle School Families,
October has arrived and the first quarter of the 24-25 school year is almost over. Students have settled into the routine of middle school and are navigating the building and their classes successfully. I am hopeful that you have created a routine at home to look at Canvas together to see upcoming assignments and that you are also looking in the student and parent portal in FOCUS on a regular basis to make sure those assignments are being turned in. Even just one missing assignment can significantly impact an overall grade.
I am sure that you noticed a difference this year in the gradebook formula. All class grades are calculated based on the assessment of standards (70%) examples include: projects, tests, quizzes, performances, labs and the practice of standards (30%) examples include: practice problems, classwork, entry/exit tickets, free writes, graphic organizers. The mission is to increase student growth and achievement while placing the focus on learning. This is a District shift and the benefits of this new practice include:
Enhanced Consistency: Ensures all teachers are using a common language and criteria for evaluating student performance.
Improved Communication: Provides students and parents with a clear understanding of how well students are mastering specific skills and knowledge.
Focus on Learning: Shifts the emphasis to mastery of content. Grades need to reflect what students know, understand, and are able to do in relation to the course content.
Maintains Teacher Autonomy: Teachers are able to determine what assessment and practice assignments are going in the two categories and what point values they are worth.
I so appreciate all of the donations that our NPMS families have made to us this year. We appreciate all of the items that were sent in to help us provide a variety of unique Den Time options.
This month students should be coming home with Bingo cards for a reading challenge. Later in this newsletter we have a plea from our Reading Committee asking for donations that they can use as prizes for completed cards that are turned back in. There is a lot of staff and student excitement about both Reading and Den Time and we are proud that NPMS is a place where everyone belongs and become the best versions of themselves.
Our Cross Country season is underway, our clubs and activities have all started, basketball tryouts for 8th-grade boys and girls will begin this month, and our cheer and poms teams have been selected and we are in the final stages of preparing for our upcoming basketball season. More communication will be sent out about then when the games are closer.
We also have after school homework help that meets after school Monday- Thursday. There is specific math help on Tuesday and Thursday as well. If your child is having difficulty with school work this is a great opportunity to get some assistance. It does not require advance registration, just a ride home at 3:30 p.m.
It's a great day to be a Grizzly!
As always, let us know what we can do to support you and your child.

40 Book Reading Challenge
We're excited to announce the launch of our 40 Book Reading Challenge at North Point Middle School! To encourage and reward our students for their reading achievements, we're planning many rewards with the first to be snacks because kids work for food!
To make this celebration a success, we're kindly requesting your support in providing snacks for the participating readers. We're hoping to offer a variety of options, including drinks, candy, chips, and any other snack middle school kids devour.
If you're able to donate any of these snacks, please send them in with your child to school labeled Reading Challenge to be dropped in the office. We appreciate your generosity in helping us create a memorable and rewarding experience for our students.
We are also looking to partner with any local businesses to support our Reading challenge if you have any local connections and would like to help us in this endeavor; Please contact Stacey Couch at staceycouch@wsdr4.org or Monica Beussink at monicabeussink@wsdr4.org .
Thank you for your support with our 40 Book Reading Challenge!

Xello for Families
WSD Families,
The Wentzville School District is excited to continue our future ready work with the district's college and career readiness platform, Xello. For the 24-25 school year, middle school and high school students in WSD will continue to utilize the platform and will begin teacher-led lessons during student success time. Lessons should be completed during the following windows of time:
Lesson 1: September 30 -October 11
Lesson 2: November 12-22
Lesson 3: January 6-24
Lesson 4: March 10-20
Xello allows students to document their journey as they build self-knowledge, explore post-secondary options, create plans, construct resumes, build a student portfolio, and continually reassess as they take in new knowledge, skills, and experiences. Students also have the opportunity to apply for colleges, request letters of recommendation and transcripts, as well as learn about current job opportunities and scholarships in our community.
Xello Student Opportunities:
Self assessment through personality, learning styles, and skill assessments
Post-secondary pathway exploration experiences
College applications and recommendation letters
Unique student portfolio and resume creation
Individual career and academic planning for high school aligned with WSD pathways
Learn about local job opportunities and scholarships in our area
Watch this Xello for families video for a program overview. More information will be available soon on how to activate your family account to view your child’s progress.
