5Essentials Survey - Parent Input
Washington is participating with the Illinois State Board of Education in the 2025 statewide survey of school climate and learning conditions. This is your chance to provide input concerning your child’s education. We value your opinions about the operation of Washington School. Our foyer has a chromebook set-up for parents to complete the survey, if you need access to a device.
The Illinois 5Essentials Surveys are available from Monday, Feb. 24 through Friday, March 28. Please use the following link to complete the survey: 5Essentials Survey. Click HERE for the message from our superintendent, Dr. Myers.
Welcome our 25-26 Principal! Dr. Lilli Melamed
The District 75 School Board on Feb. 25 approved the hiring of Dr. Lilli Melamed to serve as the next principal at Washington Early Learning Center.
“I’m really excited about this opportunity,” Melamed said. “Mundelein is a wonderful community, and I am looking forward to serving the students, staff and families of Washington School.”
The new principal grew up in the Vernon Hills/ Mundelein area and has children attending school in the Fremont School District. She is currently principal at Oak Terrace, a dual language school in Highwood, where she developed a comprehensive plan with teacher leaders to support school improvement. Prior to that she was the assistant principal and Gifted and Talented Coordinator for Oak Grove School District 68.
Melamed earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from DePaul University in 2004. She has two Master’s Degrees, one in Educational Leadership from Northeastern Illinois University (2013) and another in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University Chicago (2008). Melamed earned her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Concordia University in 2024.

ART ROOM FUN!
First grade students studied the artist Jim Dine and created textured heart sculptures and heart mixed media pieces that included experimenting with new materials. Students used layering, mark making using tempera paint sticks, paper collage, colored pencils, and oil pastels to create highlights and shadows.
Second grade students just finished Winter monochromatic cityscapes. Students learned to create a gradient of tints with tempera paint for the background, collaged a cityscape they drew after studying architectural details of buildings, finally adding shadow with oil pastel and touches of snow and glitter. I'm excited to introduce to students contemporary artist Reggie Laurent and begin a organic/geometric shape collage project next.
Try It - Lunch Room Update
Volunteers were in the WA lunchroom assisting the District with the Try It program. This program encourages students to try the food item and be a food critic and rate the food. Kindergarten said: the burritos were soooo delicious!
