Sultan Middle School Families,
Happy New Year and welcome back to school after our winter break!
Friday, January 10th, is the first afternoon of our Ski Bus program for Venture Out. Students who have have turned in all necessary paperwork, paid, and been approved to participate, need to be ready to leave SMS at 1:15pm (right after school).
The end of Quarter 2 is January 24th. Help your student finish this quarter with higher grades by using Parent PowerSchool and Canvas Observer. Don't remember your password? Venture Out to Vertical World
In December, our Venture Out club traveled to Vertical World climbing gym in Lynnwood for their second climbing adventure! Here are some pics of our Skyhawks having a blast!
Attendance Matters!
The end of Quarter 2 will be January 24th. With so many fun breaks this quarter it is even more important to have your student in class on the days we have school. We have a goal of 100% attendance. Let's rally together to support one another in this endeavor!

Tesla Halldorsson
Tesla exemplifies the true spirit of forgiveness in both their actions and attitude. Always kind and considerate, they approach every situation with a willingness to understand and work harmoniously with others. Their dedication to hard work is evident in everything they do, as they strive for excellence while showing patience and compassion. What stands out most is their remarkable ability to forgive both themselves and others, demonstrating emotional resilience and a deep understanding of the importance of growth and empathy. Their maturity and commitment to fostering a supportive environment make them a deserving candidate for this award.
Jaden Gallardo
This month, we are thrilled to highlight Jaden Gallardo, a student whose exemplary attitude and behavior have not gone unnoticed. Jaden consistently demonstrates a willingness to help his classmates, showing a genuine interest in their success and well-being. His polite demeanor and respectful listening skills make him a cherished member of our classroom community. Moreover, Jaden's great sense of humor brings joy and light-heartedness to our daily activities. We are incredibly proud to have such a kind-hearted and thoughtful student, like Jaden, in our class. Emma Smith
Let's celebrate Emma Smith, a remarkable 7th grader at Sultan Middle School, who has been honored with the award for the character trait of forgiveness! Emma's ability to forgive others, even in challenging situations, sets a powerful example for her peers. Her kindness, empathy, and understanding have helped to create a more compassionate and supportive school environment. Congratulations, Emma, on this well-deserved recognition! Your forgiving nature and kindness inspire us all to be better and kinder individuals.
Ned Day
This award for the character trait of forgiveness goes to Nehemiah Day. Nehemiah exemplifies the true essence of forgiveness through his unwavering kindness and patience. As a remarkable student, he not only excels academically but also fosters a nurturing environment for his peers. His ability to forgive and move forward, even in challenging situations, sets a powerful example for everyone around him. Nehemiah’s compassionate nature and dedication to understanding others make him a deserving recipient of this award. Congratulations, Nehemiah, for embodying the spirit of forgiveness and inspiring us all!
Hazel Clune
The 8th grade team would like to take the time to honor one of our students. Hazel Clune is a student that makes a positive contribution to our school. Hazel holds herself accountable in and outside of the classroom. Hazel is a compassionate person that looks out for others. She does a great job engaging in the classroom and is truly a pleasure to have in class.
Alia Foote
The 8th grade team would like to take the time to honor one of our students. Alia Foote is a student that makes a positive contribution to our school. Alia does her best to create an inclusive classroom by taking the initiative to make everyone feel like they belong. Alia perseveres through challenges and does so with a positive attitude and empathy. Alia makes SMS a better place.

Sports
Our next Winter sports season will include Wrestling and Girls Basketball. First day of practice is January 27th. Sign up now on Final Forms, use the link below. Your student will need a current sports physical. They are good for two years.
Be sure you've paid the sports fees and ASB for your student to participate. Sports fees are $35 per sport and $35 for ASB for the whole year. The 4th sport your student plays is free. Pay online or at the office.

Policy Reminders
Tardy Procedure
If a student is tardy to school in the morning, he/she must report to the student office. Tardiness due to dental/doctor appointments or late buses will be excused. Students not having a note from a parent/guardian or whose parent/guardian has not called will be issued an unexcused tardy.
Unexcused tardies will result in the following consequences:
• At 5th tardy – Lunch held in the Student Success Center to review expectations.
• At 8th tardy –Two lunches held in the Student Success Center to review expectations.
• At 11th tardy – Four lunches held in the Student Success Center to review expectations and a parent meeting scheduled.
• At 14th tardy --Alternative passing schedule put in place to help facilitate arriving to class on time. This will be in place for the remainder of the quarter.

Cell Phone and Electronic Use
Students are allowed to bring personal cell phones and other electronic devices to school but they may only be used before and after school (not during lunch, in the halls during passing period, or in the bathrooms). This plan puts safety and learning as priorities. All devices should be Off & Away (not vibrate or silent) and away (in backpack) during school and passing times. If a student has an emergency or needs to communicate with home/family, please contact the front office. SMS is not responsible for lost, stolen, or missing electronic item
