Vermilion Elementary
Sailor Scoop - Back to School Edition
Principals' Message
Dear Sailor Families,
On behalf of the faculty and staff of Vermilion Elementary, we would like to welcome you to the 2024-2025 school year! Our custodial staff has been hard at work all summer getting our building ready to welcome students on Wednesday, August 21, 2024!
Class lists will be posted on Wednesday August 14th at 4 pm in front of VES. Join us as we catch up with old friends and new and enjoy a popsicle as you discover who your teacher will be this year! We will also have a tour of the building at 5:30 on the 14th for students in grades 1st - 3rd who are new to the district.
We hope to see you all at our 1st - 3rd Grade Open House on Tuesday, August 20th from 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm. Families are welcome to come anytime during this window. This is an opportunity to come inside the school, find your classroom, meet your teacher and drop off any school supplies!
Kindergarten students should be signed up for a screening appointment that takes place on 8/20 -8/22. Kindergarten will have parent meetings that act as the open house. You may select to attend the meeting that best fits your schedule. Please be on time, this is not a walk through like the older grades. This is a meeting with the teacher and a chance to ask all the important kindergarten questions. These meetings take place on August 26th at 10 am or 5:30 pm. You only need to attend one of these meetings. Teacher assignments will be given at this time.
Preschool families should have received information from Mrs. Spafford. If you have questions about the upcoming preschool events. Please reach out to bspafford@vermilionschools.org.
We will send a monthly Sailor Scoop filled with important information and dates so be sure to keep an eye out for it! We also encourage you to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more frequent updates and information!
Please do not hesitate to call the Main Office at 440-204-1703 if you have any additional questions, comments, or concerns.
See you soon,
Mr. Malear and Mrs. Rebman
WELCOME TO OUR NEW INSTRUCTIONAL TEAM MEMBERS
Welcome Mrs. Uther - Kindergarten
Hi all! I am so excited to officially be a Sailor! I have had the opportunity to teach kindergarten in Oldham County Schools (Kentucky) and Reynoldsburg City Schools. I also have experience as a preschool intervention specialist. My husband and I are originally from Milan and are so excited to be back in northern Ohio with our three year old son, Baker, and dog, Euclid! I fell in love with VES while student teaching in 2015/2016 and am so excited for this year!
Welcome Miss Varga - 3rd Grade
Hi! I am Brenna Varga, a new 3rd grade teacher at Vermilion Elementary School! I am from Avon, Ohio. I also graduated from Baldwin Wallace University in May of this year and played basketball there. Growing up, I always visited Vermilion and saw the family oriented community and I knew someday I wanted to be a part of that! With being a first year teacher, I feel very grateful that I am able to start my career at a school like Vermilion. I am so excited to start this school year and be a part of my students educational journeys!
Welcome Ms. Kovac - Intervention Specialist (k-3)
I’m Kristin Kovac. I am a mother to 2 amazing girls ages 6 and 2. I love the fall season and absolutely love anything pumpkin. I also enjoy spending time outdoors in the crisp air and crafting with my Cricut. I am so excited to be entering my 11th year of teaching as a Vermilion Sailor!
Welcome Mr. Schafer - Maternity Sub for Mrs. Bailey and Mrs. Hall
We are very excited to have Mr. Schafer joining our team this year. He will begin the year working with Mrs. Bailey's class and then with our preschool team in December. Here is a little about Mr. Schafer:
My name is Sawyer Schafer. I am a recent graduate from Lourdes University in Early Childhood Elementary and graduated from Monroeville High School in 2019. In my time at college, I also played collegiate volleyball for 5 years! I am passionate about helping students grow, making a difference in their lives, and being their mentor after they leave my classroom. I grew up in a big family and always gravitated toward helping my younger cousins which sparked my passion for teaching!

Y - CLUB BEFORE AND AFTER CARE PROGRAM
We know that many of our families depended on the Boys and Girls Club for after school care at VES. Unfortunately the clubs grant expired and they were not able to secure the funds to keep our site open. Miss Wanda and her team are like family to many of us and we are sad to see them go. The district is working with the YMCA to try to fill the care gap. The YMCA does offer scholarships and financial help to those who qualify. Please reach out to the YMCA for more information: call 216-263-6860.
