Gaylord Intermediate School

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to the 2024-2025 school year at GIS. As the new principal, I am thrilled to be joining this wonderful community and look forward to building strong partnerships with our students, families, and staff.

This is my first year as the principal at GIS, and I am excited to make this transition after serving as a principal for the past 14 years in East Jordan. I have been dedicated to the field of education for 21 years, with experience in teaching 1st-5th grades, special education, and coaching softball and basketball. It’s going to be an incredible year, and I can't wait to meet each of you. Let’s make this a year full of growth, learning, and great memories!

My name is Alan Dawe. I am beginning my 18th year in education, this will be my 3rd year at GIS as the Assistant Principal. I taught 5th grade in this building for five years prior. I am a happy husband and father of four boys. Haley and I have been married 16 wonderful years. She is an educator and currently teaches for an online school. Our boys are Otis, Elwood, Kellogg, and Burl and they are our world. We stay very busy with their activities. Having boys from ages 5-12 gives me the opportunity to work with many children in our community with youth sports. I coach most of the year, and really enjoy the ability to meet children before they enter into our building.

I am looking forward to this new chapter in my career. GIS has many new faces, but many familiar faces as well. I believe we will all grow together this year and make GIS an even better place to work. Our students are ready for us, and I am confident that we will give them our GIS best!

A Gaylord Intermediate School welcome letter has been mailed this week! This mailing will include a welcome letter with homeroom teacher & student ID information, emergency card, students/parent agreement form and directory opt out information. Please submit completed forms to one of the following:

• the open house
• drop off at the office between 7:30am-3:00pm
• send with your child on the first day of school.

In need of after school care? Enroll by Friday, August 23rd to attend the first week of school. Registration forms can be emailed to Karla Hawkins or dropped off Monday-Friday from 7:30am-3:30pm at the Board of Education Office located at 615 South Elm Avenue.

School staff will supervise students on school grounds 20 minutes before the school day begins and 15 minutes after the school day ends. Unless students are participating in a school activity, school staff will not provide supervision before or after these times.

The transportation department will be sending an email with an invitation to download our NEW "Stop Finder" app. This app will provide parents with their child(ren)'s route information. The transportation department will also be available during open houses.

Due to the State of Michigan legislation, all GCS students will receive a free qualified breakfast and free qualified lunch each school day for the 2024-2025 school year. Even though meals are provided for free, it is EXTREMELY important for families to complete the Education Benefits Online application in order for Gaylord Community Schools to receive full access to federal and state funding for education program that support our students.
