Bernshausen Family Newsletter
Week of August 18, 2024
Hello, Bernshausen Families!
Dear Bernshausen Families,
It was great to welcome our students back to school this week! Our teachers focused on creating a positive environment in their classrooms with clear routines and expectations. Children thrive with clear structures and we will continue to emphasize these during the first weeks of school in order to create and maintain an optimal learning environment. Please see the information below regarding upcoming events, information, and updates.
As I mentioned last week, one of my goals with families is to have open, frequent, and clear communication. You will be receiving communication from me in the form of a newsletter like this one every Sunday. The newsletter will contain information, reminders, and updates regarding our school. I look forward to meeting you soon.
Sincerely,
Mr. Menendez
Principal
Bernshausen Elementary School

MAP Growth Test
- The purpose of MAP is to measure a student’s achievement and growth to provide teachers with the tools to appropriately intervene, extend learning and close gaps.
- The MAP test is administered at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year in Grades K-5 in various subjects depending on grade level such as: reading, math, and science.
- Please use the link below to learn more about the MAP Test and how you can support your student(s).

Remind App
- The Remind App is a useful tool for teachers to communicate with parents/families.
- Our teachers will be using Remind to send one-way reminders about activities, assignments, events, etc.
- If you need to contact your student's teacher, please send them an email, call their classroom number, leave a message at the front office, or send a note. Thank you.
- Please remain in your vehicle during morning drop-off. Our staff members are on hand to assist your student in exiting the vehicle quickly and safely, helping to keep the line moving smoothly.
- Please avoid driving around other vehicles that are waiting for students to exit. Patience is crucial for ensuring a safe and efficient drop-off, as our staff are not only helping students enter the building but also ensuring that our teachers can arrive safely through the parking lot.
- Thank you for your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe environment for all our Bengal students and staff!
- Student safety is a priority. During our dismissal process, our main objective is to ensure all students arrive home safely. Please refer to the image above to be aware of the flow of traffic during for car riders.
- Parents and guardians will receive a designated number (see sample to the right) assigned by the campus. This number must be prominently displayed in the car's front window during pick-up times. As a result, our staff can quickly identify and match the correct student with the corresponding vehicle. This method will significantly reduce the time spent searching for students and alleviate congestion in the pick-up area.
- All parents who pick up students that are "Car Riders" must have an official Bernshausen Elementary car rider tag.
- Please note, parents in the car rider line without a car rider tag will be asked to kindly park their vehicle in the visitor's parking lot and visit our front office to pick up their student. Please have your I.D. ready. If you need a car rider tag, our front office staff will be happy to assist you.
- If you do not have a car rider tag, please contact our front office at 832-375-8000 and request one from our secretaries. We will be happy to send a car rider tag home with your student. You are also welcome to visit our front office to obtain one.

Back to School Tips for Families
HERE are also some tips that can help with separation anxiety. Thank you for your efforts!
Help them learn to say their full name when someone asks them (not their nickname).
Read books every night. Their world will be enlarged, they will develop new vocabulary, and they will benefit from quality time.
Help them learn to ask for help.
Help them learn how to compete a task and work all the way through until they complete it.
Help them learn how to wait patiently. Maybe they are waiting in line while friends go to the bathroom, or maybe someone is needing to talk to their teacher. Waiting can be a hard thing for children.
Eat dinner together, with the tv off.
Help them learn to share.
Help them sharpen taking care of their basic needs by themselves - using the bathroom, washing their hands, blowing their nose.
Help them understand the concept of being told "no".
Teach them nursery rhymes. There is so much research behind this and how it supports brain development.
Help them understand it is ok to make mistakes.
Help them practice putting things in and taking things out of their backpack. Their teacher will thank you!
Help them learn to follow two step directions. For example, “Take off your shoes and hang up your jacket.”
Help them learn to sit and wait without having to be entertained. Can they sit and wait without having to be handed a device?
They will learn about table manners, how to stay in their seat an entire meal, develop vocabulary through conversation, and benefit from quality time.
