Boyden Weekly Update
February 14, 2025
In celebration of Black History Month, Boyden welcomed author Ari Ada to Boyden to share her books and amazing stories. This was far more than an author visit, the sessions were highly interactive and featured geography lessons, cultural dancing, and interactions with authentic artifacts. Ask your children about it!
This program was supported by a grant from the Walpole Local Cultural Council, a local agency of the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Also, Boyden PAC collaborated with Be Inclusive Walpole's Multicultural Books Initiative to share Ada Ari's stories with the entire Walpole community. Copies of her book "The Child's Courage" were donated to each elementary school library, as well as our Walpole Town Public Library
Enjoy the weekend!

Re:Dish Program Launch
We are excited to announce that Boyden will officially launch the Re:Dish program on February 24th! This initiative helps reduce single-use packaging in our cafeteria by introducing reusable plates and trays, supporting our school’s sustainability efforts.
By participating in Re:Dish, students will learn firsthand about environmental responsibility and the importance of reducing waste. This program not only helps create a cleaner environment but also encourages students to take an active role in sustainability.
We’re proud to be part of this meaningful initiative and look forward to making a positive impact together!
Battle of the Books Kickoff!
Last Friday Grades 3-5 participated in our Battle of the Books kickoff assembly. We are happy to bring back this engaging literacy program designed to encouraging reading and teamwork among our students. For the next three months, students will read from a list of thirteen books. The books cover a variety of authors, genres and topics ensuring that every student can find something they enjoy. Teams will be formed by grade and class. On Thursday April 17th, teams will gather for Battle Day where they compete against each other in a friendly battle of book trivia. We encourage you to learn more about this program and how you can support your child by visiting the Battle of the Books website. Thank you to our sponsors, Walpole Co-operative and Dedham Savings for supporting the program.
Have some fun with Math!
The vacation break is a perfect time for children to enjoy a fun blend of learning and relaxation. Math doesn’t have to be all about worksheets and practice problems. There are plenty of creative, hands-on ways to engage young learners and keep their math skills sharp, all while having fun! Here are some exciting math activities that kids can do at home during vacation—no classroom required.
Math Scavenger Hunt- Transform your house or backyard into a math adventure. Create a list of math challenges for your child to find or solve. For example, have them find different 2 dimensional or 3 dimensional objects to match shapes, measure four items and compare the measurements, or find items in the house with numbers and use them for fact practice.
DIY Math Board Games- Turn a rainy/snowy day into a game day with math-themed games. You can adapt classic games like "Chutes and Ladders" or "Candy Land" by adding math challenges, or students can create their own game around the concepts they’ve been learning. They could even create an ST Math Puzzle for JiJi to solve! Here is a whole list of family board games that support mathematical reasoning.
Baking with Fractions- Use baking as a hands-on way to practice fractions! Simple recipes like cookies or pancakes require measuring ingredients, which means your child will be working with fractions (like 1/2 cup or ¼ teaspoon). Ask them to: Double the recipe and adjust the ingredient amounts accordingly or divide the dough or batter into specific portions.
Math Art Projects- Incorporate geometry and symmetry into art projects by making a mosaic or collage using different shapes or materials. Cut out shapes or use pattern blocks to create pictures or designs. Have students design what their dream bedroom would look like complete with measurements (length of items, area of the room, etc.).
Math with Money- Using play or real coins, create a store where your children can buy or sell toys, snacks, etc. Have them create a shopping list of things they would like at the store and then use the store circular to see how much it would cost. Did they design their own room? Give them a budget and have them do some research to see if they could afford their Dream Bedroom!
Math Puzzles and Riddles- Does your student love puzzles? Here is a link to some free math brain teasers and puzzles that will help them develop critical, logical, and problem solving thinking skills. We have lots of digital games and resources on the Family Math Site, but we hope you will try some of these off screen activities as well.
Exciting News: The Scholastic Book Fair is Coming Back to Boyden!
We are thrilled to announce that the Scholastic Book Fair is coming back to Boyden. This special event is a wonderful opportunity for students to explore new books, build their love of reading and support our school media center and classroom libraries
Event Details:
Student Wishlist Preview: From 3/4-3/7, students will visit the media center, browse the fair, and create wishlists. They will bring these wishlists home to share with their families. (Tip: Take a photo of their wishlist for easy reference!)
Book Fair Shopping: Families are invited to visit and shop during Parent-Teacher Conferences:
- March 11: 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM
- March 13: 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM
- March 14: 1:00-3:00
How You Can Help: We need volunteers to help students create their wishlists during the Preview event. If you’re available to lend a hand, it only takes about 15-30 minutes and is a wonderful opportunity to be in the media center with your child and their friends. Every purchase made at the Book Fair directly benefits our school, so it’s a win-win!
Please sign up for the Book Preview Here
We will have another opportunity to volunteer for the actual event during conferences so please look out for that in the SMORE in late February.
Thank you for your continued support of the Book Fair and our media center. We can’t wait to see you there!

What are the Students Learning about in PE?
K: Our Kindergarten classes have started the new year off learning a variety of new exercises.Students learned different exercises that they can do at home. We have also started to work on pin games that focus on the skill of rolling. These pin games are designed to incorporate the skill, all while having fun!
1st: Our 1st grade classes have also been working on exercises to start off the new year! All of
my first grade classes worked individually on the skill of rolling. Then we learned a variety of pin
games that we played that helped develop the skill.
2nd: My second grade PE classes worked on exercise circuits the first week back from break.
We also have worked on pin games in both individual and group settings. These games and
activities will develop accuracy when using the skill of rolling.
3rd: Third graders have also finished working on exercise circuit training in their first week back!
The third graders also worked on pin games that further developed their skill of rolling. Students
started learning how to protect their pins while focusing on defense in some of these games.
4th: My fourth graders have succesfully wrapped up circuit training. These circuits involve
aerobic and strength exercises that students will learn to use outside of school. We also play
more advanced pin games that work on offense and defense.
5th: My fifth graders did an excellent job working on circuit training during the first weeks back!
Students are learning the benefits of these various exercises that they will hopefully use at
home. Fifth graders also play more advanced pin games that focus on targets, defense and
offense.
