PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION LEADERS PREPARE FOR 2023-24 SCHOOL YEAR
Earlier this week, the officers and committee chairs of Leland’s Parent Teacher Organization got together to discuss initiatives for the 2023-24 school year. Pictured above from left to right—Heather Cook, Ana Garcia, Emily LaDrig, Linnea Keen, Amanda Stowe, Nikki Rothwell, Stacey Brugeman, and Emily Miezio discussed the work of this new organization’s Executive, Steering, Membership, DEI, Appreciation, and Classroom Support Committees. A full summary of the current work of this growing group was sent to all PTO members in an August Update. If you did not receive it or otherwise wish to opt in to communication from the PTO, please fill out this membership form. In addition, be sure to save Monday, September 18th at 6pm for the first all-member meeting of the new school year. All interested parents, guardians, grandparents, and teachers are welcome. The newly formed World Learning Club is currently supporting two international study opportunities for Leland Students!
World Learning Club is a Leland Public School-endorsed club formed in 2023 to help organize support and fundraising for extended learning opportunities for Leland students grades K-12. The club seeks to provide experiences in and out of the classroom, across the county, state, country and world to enrich the lives of Leland Public School students, staff, and community.
Today's world is one of increasingly complex interdependencies. The WLC exists to provide students with opportunities for direct cross-cultural experience. The purpose is to help students strengthen transnational relationships while helping them develop the skills necessary to be successful in an ever changing world. The health of our planet and each individual depends on the skills of today’s students - their ability to work together and their willingness to learn from one another.
The WLC pursues, designs, and supports world-based educational initiatives for Leland students K-12 to increase personal development and world stewardship. We seek partners in this work.

New School Wellness Program supported by Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department
"This fall, the Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department is expanding their partnership with Leland Public School to implement a School Wellness Program (SWP). The SWP provides a full-time nurse and a full-time mental health therapist to meet the health needs of students.
The mental health therapist provides on-site, confidential therapeutic counseling, just as students could receive from a private therapist outside of school. Availability of therapy in school offers an important health care service while minimizing the loss of academic time for the student and work time for parents. Health insurance will be billed for services, as appropriate, but there will be no out-of-pocket costs for any student receiving services."

Move This World - Social Emotional Learning
Dear Families,
To support our students’ social emotional needs and mental health, we are using a video-based social emotional learning (SEL) curriculum from Move This World. I’m excited to share that you’ll be able to access this helpful curriculum at home, too!
Social emotional learning is how students learn to process and manage emotions as well as important social skills. It includes everything from goal setting to stress management, and it provides both children and adults with tools they can use to express themselves authentically and safely. SEL helps students build healthy relationships, communicate effectively, and live a meaningful life.
Below, you’ll find log in instructions:

Practicing social emotional learning at home can help your students:
Identity and recognize their emotions.
Build critical social skills.
Connect with themselves and others.
Navigate challenges they may be experiencing.
Adjust to the new school year.
Move This World is a social emotional learning program delivered through an extensive online library of PreK-12 videos and resources rooted in creative expression that help students, teachers and staff develop a common language to improve communication and build trust. We’re so glad that you’ll be able to access Move This World videos and resources at home, and hope they are helpful for your students and family.
