Principal's Message
Happy October! September was a great month of learning.
Our 4th, 5th and 6th graders began their Visual and Performing Arts classes, and our K-4th graders participated in Art Masters, where they studied and created art reminiscent of Rene Magritte.
We kicked of our GRIP (Gang Reduction Intervention Program) partnership. The GRIP team presented to all of our 5th graders about the importance of making good choices in order to achieve dreams. The GRIP team also met with parents at the first Parents Supporting Parents meeting of the year. The parents learned about gang prevention and how to foster academic success with good home habits. Many parents signed up to be GRIP greeters at the meeting. Also, we kicked off our GRIP mentorship program (staff and students) at a delicious breakfast hosted by Chik Fil A.
Handy's after school enrichment programs started this month! We are so proud to offer Green Team, Robotics Team, Accordion Band, Baille Folklorico, Hip Hop, Cheerleading, Soccer, and e-sports. In addition to these offerings, after-school academic intervention will begin this month.
Mrs. Cody and Mr. Rodriguez's classes performed at the first Spirit Assembly of the year. They led the entire school in a celebration of Hispanic Heritage month. Then, they sang a catchy tune all about our core value of Responsibility.
During October, we will be focusing on the core value of Respect-an important skill for school and life! Here are some great tips for reinforcing Respect at home:
- Model respectful behavior at home.
- Praise children when they show respectful behavior.
- Teach children that differences are to be celebrated and respected.
- Be polite and avoid interrupting.

I encourage every Handy scholar to give their best effort each and every day because: Learning today makes a brighter tomorrow!
With gratitude,
Erika A. Krohn, Principal

Handy Attendance Procedures
Great attendance is important for your child's well being, learning, and long term success! Here are some actions we take at Handy to promote GREAT attendance:
- Each month, all students who earn Perfect Attendance (here each day, no tardies or early pick ups) receive a backpack brag tag!
- Monthly, students who have missed 10% or more of school days so far this year, receive an Attendance Letter from the Principal and a phone conference with our Community Lead.
Don't forget that you must report your child's absence and the reason for the absence each time your child misses school.
Come to the Attendance Matters Parent Workshop on Thursday, October 3 at 8:30 A.M. in Room 63. Refreshments will be served.
