It’s Safety Week at Leyden
Safety Week will take place at Leyden August 26-30. The drills practiced during the week meet state requirements and help Leyden students and staff know what to expect should an emergency arise. Please note that there may be a visible presence from the first responders during the drills.
We recognize that running drills, particularly an active threat drill, may prompt many different feelings. Students who may have concerns or need additional support during this week should reach out to the Deans office.
Safety Week Schedule
Monday, August 26 -
Tuesday, August 27 - Safety video will be shown during periods 2 and 9
Wednesday, August 28 - “Hold,” “Secure,” and “Active Threat” drills during period 10
Thursday, August 29 - “Shelter” drill during period 2
Friday, August 30 - “Evacuate” drill during period 3

Strive for 95: Leyden encourages strong attendance for students
Leyden is placing a heavy focus on improving student attendance rates this year, as we believe it is the best step towards their pursuit of success. Students with higher attendance rates also have higher grades, graduation rates, and stronger social-emotional connections.
The campaign, called Strive for 95, aims to have each student in school at least 95-percent of the time. As a way to help families and students remain accountable to these expectations, a Weekly Recap is sent via email on Fridays, and shows the more current individualized attendance rates.
As an incentive, students who maintain their strong attendance are eligible for monthly raffles, Leyden swag, Javaccino coupons, pizza parties, reduced dance tickets, and more! Stay tuned as our first round of award-winners will be announced in the coming weeks.
Leyden offers virtual parent series
Leyden Student Services offers a virtual parent series through a partnership with Glenbard Parent Series (GPS) that provides free, public, day and evening sessions.

Future Business Leaders of America
Five of Leyden’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) students traveled to Orlando in June with approximately 13,000 other students to compete at the National Leadership Conference. East Leyden senior Marina Stoyanova placed 9th in a cybersecurity competition while in attendance.
Operation Snowball
Students from East Leyden and West Leyden attended the Cebrin Goodman Teen Institute (CGTI) summer leadership conference where they learned skills to help them become better community leaders. East took its largest group of students ever - 27!
Students also earned community service hours, heard guest speakers, and designed an anti-vaping action plan they are excited to implement this year.
Summer Service Trip
Over the summer, 14 West Leyden students along with Dr. Senteno, Ms. Leparoux, Ms. Orozco and Ms. Zapata, traveled to support two organizations: Pasitos de Luz (provides care for children with disabilities) and Casa Hogar (a shelter dedicated to improving the lives of orphaned, abandoned, disadvantaged or vulnerable children). Leyden has had long standing relationships with both organizations. While there, students did various jobs to provide support such as feeding students, cleaning, laundry, reading and playing with kids and helping in the orchard.
