March 2025

"When schools thrive, communities thrive."
A Message From Dr. Lisa Krueger...
Hello West Seneca Central School District,
I am excited to share my publication with you!
This newsletter will be a synopsis of district updates brought to you on a monthly basis. I will share information, updates and celebrate the great things happening in our schools. Through this, the hope is that you feel more informed through these district publications.
With West Seneca Pride,
Dr. Lisa Krueger
Superintendent's Monthly Guest Column in the West Seneca Bee
As we develop our school budget for the 2025-26 school year, we recently launched a ThoughtExchange to seek input and feedback from our stakeholders. Parents, faculty, staff and residents participated in this, and their insights were valuable and appreciated. One comment, however, sent me into problem-solving mode.
In response to the question, “What has been your primary source of information regarding our upcoming budget?” A respondent replied, “Social media. Since my son graduated in 2020, I have not received any newsletters or emails from the district.”
As we strive to increase and improve our communications, we will be offering another way for you to stay informed and connected to our schools. Anyone can join our community email group. We will share information to this email group regarding events of community interest such as ticket sale information for school musicals, East vs. West athletic events, etc. We will also keep readers informed of our ongoing work to improve our school facilities, our school budget, and our current redistricting process to balance enrollment in our schools. Whether you have preschool aged children and are not yet receiving information from your future school or children who have graduated, our community emails will share information with residents who want to stay informed.
To sign up to receive our community emails, please send an email to
communications@wscschools.org. In the subject line please include the words “community email”. Alternatively, you can complete a digital form to be added to our community email list by visiting our website to sign up: www.wscschools.org/email.
We recently held our second community forum to update residents on the work of our Redistricting Committee. All of the meeting agendas, meeting minutes and presentations of our Redistricting Committee can be found on our website(www.wscschools.org/redistricting). Additionally, as we prepare for our 2025-26 school budget and annual vote, we are maintaining transparency in our process. We launched a Budget Advisory Committee this fall, and the committee’s resources including meeting agendas, meeting minutes and resources can be found on our website(www.wscschools.org/budget). Furthermore, at every Board meeting a budget update is shared. Our Board meetings can be viewed via live streaming, or can be viewed later. A recording of our school board meetings can be found on our website www.wscschools.org/BOElivestream.
There are exciting things happening in our schools, and our future is bright. With the support of the community through our May 20 school budget vote, we anticipate making much-needed upgrades to our failing sound, lighting and rigging systems in our high school and middle school auditoriums. Presently, we must rent supplemental lighting equipment for our school musicals. Due to the age of our equipment, replacement parts are becoming more difficult to find and repairs are becoming more expensive. Our proposed improvements will provide our two high school and two middle school auditoriums with safe, functional and reliable equipment. More detailed information will be shared during our Budget Presentations at School Board meetings and in our Budget mailing to residents.
West Seneca’s music department is one of the greatest points of pride for our school district, and the replacement of our outdated and failing equipment will allow our students to continue to shine on stage.
Thank you for your continued support of our music program and the West Seneca Central Schools.
"Today a reader, tomorrow a leader!"
For schools around the country, March is known to some as "March Into Literacy Month"(and to others, National Reading Month).
Our district marched into the month with exciting author visits, whole school "We Are From" poem writing, improv comedy & storytelling, book fairs, spirit weeks, free book tables, home reading activities, dressing up lockers with hand-drawn favorite book covers, family literacy nights, battle of the books incorporating March Madness-like brackets with school voted favorite books, guest readers and so much more! During this time, our district celebrates more than just the essential skills of reading and writing; it embodies a vibrant philosophy that many of us were taught in our youth: Reading Is FUNdamental!
We hope that you and your family embrace the joy and discovery that reading brings, and celebrate the transformative power of literacy in our lives everyday!
Please enjoy a small sample of photos below that were shared from our schools:
"Dream big and enjoy life!"
Our district's technology partner, Extreme Networks, spent some time in our schools over the past year. After being so impressed by the staff and students alike, they nominated our district to receive the honor of a visit from the Pro Football Hall of Fame's "Heart of a Hall of Famer" program series.
The "Heart of a Hall of Famer" program series, powered by Extreme Networks, provides students the opportunity to learn first-hand what it took beyond athletic ability for legendary Heroes of the Game to achieve success on and off the field with a focus on the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Values of: Commitment, Integrity, Courage, Respect and Honesty.
Hundreds of nominations pour in for this opportunity because only 17 schools are chosen per year across the county. You can only imagine the excitement when we learned we were 1 of 17 schools that were chosen. Not only that, we were chosen to host the live interview with Buffalo Bills legend and Hall of Famer - Thurman Thomas!
Thurman discussed with the students the importance of being a good person every single day, to dream big and enjoy life! He also fielded questions from our East & West Athletes as well as questions from other schools via Zoom. Thurman spent time after his discussion to take pictures with students & staff which we have included some of the photos for you below, as well as the recorded interview that can also be found on YouTube.
A huge thank you to Extreme Networks, The Pro Football Hall of Fame & Thurman Thomas!
Spotlight On Learning
We are very fortunate to have such incredibly talented students in our district. A small portion of those students from both East & West Senior High Schools in the class - West Seneca Designs - welcomed members of the Board of Education and I to a presentation along with a hands-on demonstration of the creation and production process that is used to create the projects for their student-run business - "West Designs".
Students explained the machines that are used to create products and the skills they use to create each design. This class not only teaches students about all of the different departments of a business, it also helps build pride, ownership and connectivity within the district and our community. These students have worked very hard to create their projects, promote their work and sell them in their school's bookstores and in pop-up shops in our district.
For more photos and to stay up to date with West Designs as it evolves, you can click the following link to be redirected to follow their student run Instagram account - @wsw_designs.
