Marian Central Catholic High School
From the Desk of Mrs. Debra Cunico
I really think that Spring has sprung! The weather is starting to improve, which allows our spring athletes to participate in their sports without too many cancellations! Don’t hold it against me, though, if the weather turns. As Catholics, we know that we are not in control… God is!
This concept… what we can and cannot control, is certainly something that all of us grapple with as we go through our lives. God did give us the responsibility, for instance, to make our own choices and take good care of ourselves and those around us, right?
I recently had my monthly meeting with our newest teachers as part of our school’s Teacher Mentor Program. Interestingly enough, it focused on “Surviving the End of the School Year,” and while teachers face their share of struggles the last quarter of the school year, so do our students! It is for this reason that I thought I would parallel some of the concepts I shared with our teachers with the same types of concepts our students go through. Here goes!
Classroom Environment
It is really easy to lose focus in class when the weather is getting nicer and especially for our students afflicted with “Senioritis!” When we lose focus, we may not be paying attention in class, possibly being a little disruptive, or not doing what the teacher asks. Students need to realize that the energy they put into things determines the value they may get out of it. Encourage your students to stay engaged! Students, continue to participate in class, stay positive, and do their best all the way through May.
Curriculum
For my teachers, this time of year means a “drive to the finish line,” causing them to make sure they have covered everything they needed to in the course, and to still make it engaging and fruitful. For students, it is all about trying their best, struggling through the more difficult concepts until that lightbulb goes off, and if it doesn’t… ask for help! Not only will their teacher help, but ANY teacher would be more than willing to help! In addition, don’t forget that we have NHS tutors ready and able to help students! The important thing is to make sure that you are always learning!
Take Care of Yourself
Just as important for my teachers… and all of us to take care of ourselves, our students need to as well! This means that we need to get enough sleep, eat well, stay hydrated, get organized, and always keep your faith strong through prayer and participation in your church. In addition, it is important to balance this with recreational time, like hanging with friends, sports & clubs, and family time. We all will eventually figure out that the things we prioritize are different, depending on the time of year and our immediate needs, but when we do, we will find that we have ample time to do all we want or need to without too much stress!
No one ever said things were always going to be easy, but when we ensure all of the things that are important to us are part of our lives, we are able to live happier, more productive lives.
For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. ~ Hebrews 10:36
