Science
Hello scientists!
This week we wrapped up our Earth’s Place in the Universe unit with an orbit simulation and a collaborative lesson about the life cycle of stars.
Next week we will begin the week with our Earth’s Place in the Universe summative on Monday 2/10. Once students complete their summatives, we will begin our Space Systems and Cycles unit by illustrating past and present models of our solar system.
Next Thursday 2/13 we will have our Roots 3.2 quiz on the following words: *gram = unit of mass (think: kilogram)
atmo = air, smoke, vapor (think: atmosphere)
*hydro = water (think: hydrosphere)
*iso = equal (think: isometric)
baro = weight (think: barometer)
Keepers: angle, deci, semi, alp, morph, sed
Below are the links to Blookets (quiz study games) for the summative next Monday. Students can access them on a phone, computer, or tablet. Please encourage your student to spend some time on these this weekend!

As we start the 3rd quarter, the science classroom is looking forward to more fun labs, including one of our messiest yet – the Oreo Moon Phases Lab! Before we can have fun getting messy, we need some cleaning supplies as the room is almost out. If they are able, science students are asked to bring 2 of the following:
A roll of paper towels
A container of cleaning wipes
A box of tissues
A box of pencils
Printer Paper
World Geography
Last Week students participated in their UN simulation with speeches for their countries. They continued their simulation with a formal and informal debate format, closing out with voting on final resolutions for our education committee. They closed out their week with Journey's to School documentary.
This Week students will close out of unit 4 exploring Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs). We will launch into Unit 5 mid week, on East Asia with mapping and glossary words. Students should prepare to study over the weekend. They will review their mapping materials for jeopardy review game Monday, 2/10 so that they will do well on their East Asia map quiz, Tuesday, 2/11.
English Language & Arts (ELA)
Key Reminder: We are in desperate need of tissue boxes and Clorox wipes as we continue to get through flu season.
Last week, students completed their Summative essay on Eleven and The Scholarship Jacket. This was required to write in class in a shortened amount of time so they experience the time crunch that DC CAPE will require. If your student missed any days this past week, please check your email. I have sent materials and information for specific days.
Weekly Agenda:
Monday – Annotate student examples
Tuesday – Peer review
Wednesday – Trip to the library – If students have not found novels on their Lexile level yet for February Book Report, they need to talk to me and/or the librarian to find resources.
Thursday – I will be out of town. Students will be briefed on the writing assignment they will have while I am out. This will be on Canvas under Announcements as well.
For families who have requested wishlists/opportunities to support the classroom (items like: novels, pencils, highlighters, staplers, notebook paper, etc), I have constructed the following items. Please do not feel required to donate, this is just for those interested.
- Teachers Pay Teachers Fund: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/ClassFund/Ms-Kaitlyn-Johnson-4553?ownCampaign=&utm_campaign=ClassFundShare
