This past quarter has been one of exciting kickoffs, impactful events, and the addition of new members to our College and Career Access Center (CCAC) team! As we reflect on the milestones of the last few months, we are energized by the progress we’ve made and the opportunities ahead.
A New School Year Begins: We kicked off our 17th year of service and our 12th year of partnership with the 13 Jackson County school districts. We also launched the 8th-grade college and career exploration initiative - Kids2College and Pathways2Professional Skilled Trades program - as well as the 11th-grade college exploratory initiative, Juniors Over the Local Circuit. Be sure to check out the schools that participated this past quarter and the colleges and companies that made these programs possible!
FAFSA Season and Data Insights: Although FAFSA’s opening was delayed until December 1, we eagerly began assisting students and their families with this critical financial aid application. Check out the data below to see how we performed as a county in previous years. Additionally, we hosted several successful events, including our Fun Fall College Application Event and Winter Wonderland FAFSA and Scholarship Event. Over 60 attendees joined us to complete college applications, scholarship submissions, and FAFSA forms. Attendees enjoyed delicious barbecue prepared by Mr. Brian Green and spent quality time with our fantastic team.
Spotlight on Scholarships: Scholarship season is in full swing! Check out some of the newly available local scholarships highlighted in this edition. These opportunities are a vital part of our mission to ensure every student can pursue higher education without financial barriers.
Celebrating Our Clients and Students: We are excited to introduce “Testimonial Highlights” where we’ll showcase what our clients are saying about their experiences with our dedicated CCAC team. Their feedback highlights our knowledgeable, genuine, and intentional approach to service.
Additionally, we are proud to feature our Students of the Month from this past quarter. These remarkable individuals have been diligently working on their plans for life after high school, and we celebrate their achievements.
Welcoming New Team Members: Please join us in welcoming Jennifer Symons, our new Operations Support Specialist, and Jacob Gagne, who is now serving as a full-time advisor at Northwest High School. Their expertise and passion will enhance our ability to serve students and families in our community.

Your contributions allow us to continue empowering students to achieve their college and career dreams. Thank you for standing with us.
Wishing you a joyous holiday season with family and friends. We look forward to working together in the new year to help students start their futures with confidence and purpose.

CCAC Initiatives and Events
Kids2College and Pathways2Professional Skilled Trades
So far, the Kids2College and Pathways2Professional Skilled Trades initiative has engaged 8th-grade students from five districts - DaVinci, East Jackson, Grass Lake, Michigan Center, and Springport - providing them with valuable exposure to post-secondary education and career opportunities. Students have toured esteemed colleges, including Hillsdale College, Albion College, Spring Arbor University, and Adrian College, while also visiting prominent manufacturers and businesses like Wardcraft, Classic Metal Finishing, Orbitform, Henry Ford Health, Alro Plastics, and Advance Turning and Manufacturing. These experiences inspire students and broaden their understanding of potential pathways to successful careers in skilled trades and beyond. We look forward to continuing these impactful tours with more districts in the spring!
Juniors Over the Local Circuit
The Juniors Over the Local Circuit initiative has provided 11th-grade students from 10 of our 13 school districts with the opportunity to explore higher education options right here in the Jackson area. Students from Concord, DaVinci, Grass Lake, Hanover-Horton, Jackson High, Napoleon, Northwest, Springport, Vandercook, and Western have participated in tours of local colleges, including Albion College, Jackson College, and Spring Arbor University. These visits allow students to learn more about the programs, resources, and opportunities available close to home, empowering them to make informed decisions about their futures. We are thrilled with the participation so far and look forward to continuing these meaningful experiences for our students.
Fun Fall College Application Event
On Saturday, October 5th, during Michigan College Month, we hosted our Fun Fall College Application Event at the College and Career Access Center to assist students with completing their college applications. The event brought together approximately 30 students and families, creating a supportive and productive environment for tackling this important milestone. With the help of our knowledgeable team, students received guidance on application processes, tips for crafting strong applications, and answers to their questions. It was a rewarding day dedicated to helping students take the next step toward achieving their college goals!
Winter Wonderland FAFSA and Scholarship Event
On December 7th, we hosted our Winter Wonderland FAFSA and Scholarship Event at the College and Career Access Center, providing an opportunity for students and families to work on submitting their FAFSA and get started on their scholarship applications. Over 30 attendees joined us for this productive event, where they received personalized assistance from our team to navigate the FAFSA process and explore various scholarship opportunities. The event was a great success, helping students take crucial steps toward funding their higher education and ensuring they are well-prepared for the next phase of their college journey.
Data and Highlights
Speaking of FAFSA…
We recently collected data comparing the Jackson County FAFSA completion rate to both the State of Michigan and the National completion rates from the 2018-2019 academic year to the 2023-2024 academic year. This analysis allows us to better understand how our local students are progressing in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) compared to state and national trends. By examining these trends over the past five years, we aim to identify areas for improvement and celebrate successes, as well as to refine our strategies for supporting students in navigating the financial aid process.
Our emphasis on FAFSA completion is directly linked to expanding access to post-secondary educational opportunities. Since the FAFSA is essential for securing financial aid for both college and skilled trade programs, encouraging students and families to complete it helps unlock crucial funding for their educational goals.

Supporting Our Mission
As we celebrate our 17th year of service, the demand for our programs is greater than ever. The state's focus on education is evident through the growing number of college and career access opportunities, and CCAC is committed to promoting these opportunities throughout Jackson County. Here’s what we've accomplished this year:
Engaged with over 1,000 students in schools
Reached 1,200 adults through community outreach
Welcomed over 600 visitors at our Center
Introduced over 2,000 students to college and career paths through our college and business tours
These numbers tell a powerful story of our impact—but there is still much work to be done. We’re on a mission to open doors for those who thought they had missed their chance and to retain local talent by making Jackson a hub of opportunity and growth. We need your support to continue this critical work.
This year brings exciting changes that will enhance our mission:
Michigan College Guarantee: Free community college Jackson County high school students from the Class of 2023 or later.
The New FAFSA: The gateway to affordability, with the CCAC as the premier navigators for Jackson County.
Michigan Reconnect: Free community college for anyone aged 21 and over, now extended through December 31st.
These opportunities are transformative for our community, and we need your help to maximize our impact. Your donation will directly support our efforts to connect more students and adults to educational opportunities, financial resources, and career paths.
Today is the day to act. Now is the time for Michigan to reconnect, and for you to reconnect with CCAC. Your contribution will help us:
Expand our outreach to even more students and families.
Support individuals navigating the FAFSA process, opening doors to education.
Retain local talent by showcasing the opportunities available right here in Jackson County.
Join us at the Center, follow us on social media, and consider making a donation today. (Click here to donate today!) Together, we can create a brighter future for Jackson County!
Students of the Quarter
October Student of the Month
Kelly Caroen is the CCAC’s Student of the Month. She is a dedicated high school senior from Hanover-Horton who is preparing to take her love for dance to the next level. After graduation, she plans to join a college dance program while exploring academic interests like engineering, astronomy, pre-law, or kinesiology. "With so many possibilities, it’s hard to say what I’ll truly like until I take classes," she shares. Along with her dance major, she plans to pursue a double major in another field that excites her.
Her passion for dance began when she watched a VHS tape of the Irish Riverdance as a child. Now, she spends over seven hours a week training at the Academy of the Arts in Spring Arbor and even more when preparing for performances. Outside of dance, she enjoys reading.
Support from her family and mentors has been key to her success. From her parents to Miss Kelsey, who helped with rehearsals and shows, she recognizes the importance of her support system: "It takes a village."
One of her proudest achievements was attending a summer intensive at the Joffrey Ballet in New York City, where she trained for three weeks and performed at Symphony Space on Broadway. The experience helped her grow both as a dancer and as an individual.
Her advice to peers? "It's okay to not know what you want to do in life, especially now. Sometimes what you want to do may take a leap of faith. All you can do is accept uncertainty and push yourself towards your goals."
We’re proud to showcase her dedication and creativity as she continues to inspire others with her passion for both the arts and learning!
November Student of the Month
This month, we’re excited to feature Amyia Worthey, a Northwest High School senior who is turning her passion for cosmetology into a thriving career. She spends her mornings at school and her afternoons at the Career Center, working hard to complete the 1,500 hours required for her cosmetology license. After graduation, her plan is to pass the state board exam, begin her career, and pursue a business degree—all with the goal of opening her own salon one day.
Her love for cosmetology started at a young age, fueled by her passion for helping others feel good about themselves. "I love to make people feel good about themselves, and that's the main reason I chose cosmetology as my career goal," she shares. Her hard work has already paid off, including winning first place in the career center's Beauty and Fashion Event during her junior year. Outside of school and work, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, going to concerts, and honing her hairstyling skills. Her advice for others? “Always be confident in yourself and never give up on your goals!”
December Student of the Month
We are proud to honor Jake Saunders, from East Jackson High School, as our Student of the Month. A dedicated student and athlete, Jake has made a name for himself both in the classroom and on the baseball field.
Jake plans to continue his baseball career in college, though he's still undecided on his field of study. He credits his family, friends, and coaches for guiding his journey. "My family and friends set the standard high for me," he says, "and my coaches and teammates keep me in check."
Jake looks up to three key figures in his life: his dad, who he describes as his hero and the man he admires most; his high school baseball coach Hudson, who taught him the importance of mental strength; and his travel baseball coach KJ, who has taught him life lessons and the importance of never settling for less.
Outside of school, Jake enjoys basketball, weightlifting, and spending time with friends and family. His proudest accomplishments include receiving his first college baseball offer and being named Student Athlete of the Month at East Jackson, where he strives to be a leader for younger students.
Jake offers valuable advice to his peers: "It’s okay not to be perfect. It’s about getting back up when you fall." With the support of those he admires, Jake is ready to tackle the future with determination and gratitude.

Allskate Fun Center, founded in 1985 by Ray and Kathleen Oliver, has been a beloved family entertainment destination in Jackson for nearly four decades. Ray designed the roller rink with the help of his family, ensuring it would be a fun, safe space for families to enjoy. His son Mark Oliver, who helped lay the rink floor, now carries on the family legacy as the sole owner. A U.S. veteran with a passion for roller skating, Mark enjoys teaching kids, engaging with customers, and promoting the health benefits of roller skating.
Allskate's mission is simple: to provide a healthy, safe, and fun environment for families. The rink hosts a variety of activities, from regular skating sessions and arcade games to birthday parties, corporate events, school field trips, and community gatherings. Allskate also serves as a venue for STEM programs, homeschool classes, and fundraisers, offering something for everyone in the community.
Each day at Allskate brings new events, from skating and laser tag to special parties and school activities. Whether it’s a private event or a fun outing with friends and family, there’s always something exciting happening. Mark hopes Allskate will continue to be a place where generations of families can make lasting memories, as many customers who came as children are now returning with their own kids.
Some of the most rewarding moments for Mark are when kids who took lessons return to show off their new skills. One of his favorite memories is a birthday party where a child’s cake was shaped like a roller skate—a sweet reflection of how much the rink means to its visitors.
Mark’s advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is to start with something you’re passionate about, work hard, and remain persistent—even when things don’t go as planned. Allskate has been built on this dedication to family, fun, and community, and will continue to be a cherished place for years to come.
