Rāmere Friday 10th February Hui-Tanguru 2023 (T1:W2/10)
Our Tumuaki / Principal
A Good Start: We have had a good start to this term with the children settling in well. The work that the teachers did during the holidays and the preparation work by you, our parents, in getting their uniforms and stationery sorted has contributed well to this.
Boiler Upgrade: We are still waiting for the boiler work to be completed. The timeline for work has moved constantly as it awaits Southland District Council approval. A renewed timeline has the project completed in preparation for Term Two.
Meet the Teacher Goal Setting: Thank you to the many many parents who have booked their time slot for next week to come in and meet their child's 2023 teacher and set goals for their child's formal learning year. Research indicates that a strong teacher-home partnership benefits the child and their learning.
Acknowledging - Team Edendale
- Jenny Coyle: Jenny is a very dedicated Deputy Principal. She is often here at the weekends completing the many different tasks that come with her multiple roles as teacher and DP. On top of that, she contributes a power of work to the Edendale Community Pool Society. This year, one of her special projects is to be the in-school lead in getting us ready for a move to structured literacy. With Jenny at the helm, it will be firmly focused on the learning needs of the children and the organisation requirements of the classroom. Thanks, Jenny for all that you add to our school.

Ritchies School Buses: Edendale School is served by a busing network managed through Ritchies. The bus routes are provided to us by the Ministry of Education and are not a door-to-door service. Many families have to travel to connect to their designated and specified route.
Two of our buses are shared with Menzies (Homested and Brydone), one is solely for us (Seaward Downs) and one is a Menzies Bus which has some of our children on it (Fortrose).
To help this all work as best as possible for everyone the following is very helpful:
- Morning: To ensure a smooth bus run please have all children ready prior to the bus' arrival in the morning so that there is a quick pick-up at each stop.
- After school: We do our best to get children to the bus as quickly as possible. Your assistance with telling us early of any change of arrangements (prior to 2.30pm) greatly helps us (and those parents waiting for the children at various pick-ups along the routes) to get everyone to where they need to be as promptly as possible.
- One-Offs: For students who want to have a visitor join them on the bus to travel to or from home or school in a one-off situation, we do ask that you, as parent/caregiver, provide our school (and bus driver) with a note about it (prior to the visitor travelling) or that you phone our school office 03 206 6959. Further Ritchies, who run the buses, need to be notified at their office on 03 208 9902. Please note this is not a door-to-door service and children will be dropped off at a point that is closest to the destination. Parents will need to coordinate with the person their child is going to regarding having an appropriate person there to support their child if there is further walking or transport needed.
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kea
Ridge Laurence is our first MVP in Team Kea for 2023. Ridge is a lovely young man who demonstrates our school value of Manaakitanga - Respect.
Ridge walks into our classroom in the morning and gets himself ready for the day. He knows our daily routines and follows them well. Ridge is always organised with the right equipment ready to learn.
Ridge has stepped up to be one of the leaders in our classroom this year and is already being a handy helper to myself and the new children. He is a fantastic role model who I can trust to be doing the right thing.
Ridge shows respect by talking and playing politely with his peers. When he is using classroom equipment he is gentle and makes sure it gets put away in the right place.
Ridge has a positive attitude and gives every learning task a go. He tries his best and completes his work to a very high standard.
You have had a wonderful start to school Ridge. I know you will continue to be a super learner and role model in Team Kea. I look forward to seeing all your future achievements here at Edendale Primary School.
Keep up the awesome work!
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Pukeko
Piper Johnstone
We have all had a great start to the year in Team Pukeko and Piper is one student in particular who has already shown that she is a young lady who carries out our school value of Manaakitanga - Respect at all times and in all places.
Piper has risen to the challenge of learning the routines and expectations of her new teacher and classroom. I have been impressed by Piper’s consistent manners - she is quick to say 'Please', 'Thank you' and 'Excuse me' when talking to myself, other staff, or her peers.
Piper follows instructions quickly and accurately and is willing to help others if they have forgotten what to do. She makes sure she has unpacked her belongings in the morning, that she has her stationery ready, and that she completes her afternoon job properly.
Teamwork makes the dream work, and with wonderful students like Piper in Team Pukeko, I know that we will have a great time with our learning this year.
Thank you, Piper, for being a super role-model for your team-mates - keep it up, you help make our team strong! Ka pai!
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kereru
The MVP for Manaakitanga Respect in Team Kereru is Libby Blackmore.
Libby is a positive and kind student towards her peers, inside and outside of the classroom. She is respectful to those around her and won’t put others down. She also shows respect when others are talking. Libby will complete work that is given to her and will ask for help if it is needed.
Libby follows the school values and is capable of being a great leader with an approachable personality. She has a quiet confidence about her that makes others feel comfortable.
Libby uses her manners around the school and will greet you with a smile on her face. She knows the class routines and will follow them the best she can.
Libby joins in with class discussion and thinks about questions before coming up with an answer. She also listens to feedback when it is given.
I am sure you will continue to shine and your confidence will grow Libby. Keep being a superstar and never stop being you!
