The Dragons' Lair
August 2024
From the Principals
Hello Dragon Families:
What a great start to the new school year! The students and teachers were so excited to meet all their new friends and start learning new things!
In case you haven’t had a chance to meet us yet, let us introduce ourselves:
Sandy Myers is the Principal at Silver Creek Elementary School. This is my sixth year as principal at Silver Creek Elementary. Before that, I was the principal at Silver Creek Primary for 6 years. My family and I live in Sellersburg. We have three children. My youngest daughter attends Silver Creek Middle School and my son and other daughter graduated from SCHS. My husband and I believe Sellersburg is the best location around to raise and educate our children!
Kristin Bye is one of our Assistant Principals. Before coming to Silver Creek, Kristin was a teacher, Counselor, and Middle School principal. She is originally from Orleans, Indiana, but her and her family have been lucky enough to call Silver Creek their home for the past three years. Kristin and her husband Jeremy have two sons. Breckin is a sophomore at Silver Creek High School and Brayson is in the seventh grade at Silver Creek Middle School.
Jon Sifers is also an Assistant Principal! This is his fifth year serving in this position. He also taught at Silver Creek Elementary School for 8 years. He graduated from Silver Creek High School and is a veteran of the United States Navy. His wife, Liz Sifers, teaches kindergarten at Silver Creek Primary School. They have two children. Reece is a sixth grader at SCMS and Whitley is in the fourth grade at SCE.
Our door is always open. If you have something you would like to speak with us about, please call the office at 246-3312 to set up an appointment. We are happy to listen and would love to meet each of you! You can also email us at smyers@scsc.school, kbye@scsc.school, or jsifers@scsc.school.
We believe that YOU are the most important teacher in your child’s life. We must work together as partners to ensure ALL students are successful this school year. All of the SCE staff will do everything possible to make sure your child is getting the best possible education!
It is our goal to be sure each child feels safe, enjoys learning, and builds positive character traits. We know we can speak for the whole staff when we say, we are excited to start this new year and can’t wait to get to know each of you and your children!
Mrs. Myers, Mrs. Bye, and Mr. Sifers
Important Attendance Information
We want to inform all parents and guardians of a few changes to attendance regulations and procedures this year. These changes are in part due to changes in Indiana law, and in an effort to create conisistency accross the district. A couple of important points to mention are that parents/ guardians will be receiving letters home when students reach 5, 10, and 15 absences for any reason. Please note that for many students, this is just to serve as a reminder. SCE must now report students to probation that are considered habitually truant, which occurs when a student reaches 5 unexcused absences in a 10 week period, or reaches 10 total unexcused absences. This makes it critical to get doctor notes to the school office in a timely manner to prevent from being considered habitually truant. Please see the attached document for further explanation.
Parent Portal
If you have not created your Parent Portal account, you will want to do this as soon as possible. This account will follow your child as long as they are enrolled in an SCSC school. This is where you can access grading information, make payments, attendance information, update your contact information, complete annual registration, and make payments to your child's account.
If you do not have access to your parent portal please email your name, your student's name, and your email on file to SCEPortal@scsc.school.
If you have had access in the past, you can simply click on the link for forgot username or forgot password to reset these. That will be much quicker than calling the office.
Car Rider Pick Up
At Silver Creek Elementary we care about the safety of all our students. Please see the following important announcements to help us keep all students safe regarding morning and afternoon car riders.
Please remember that our building opens at 7:40 every morning. Officer Tillett, Mr. Sifers, and myself will be at the door to let the kids in. Please do not drop your student off early or let them get out of the car until you see staff opening the door. When pulling into our circle PLEASE pull as far forward as possible (even if it is raining). We will let students enter both Door V and Door A. We want to maximize how many students are exiting the cars to get everyone in as quickly as possible. Once stopped safely by the building sidewalk, have your student exit the car and walk into the building.
In the afternoons, we begin dismissing car riders at 3:00. Everyone MUST have the SCE car rider tag to pick up students in the car rider line. Anyone who does not have the tag will be asked to park and go to the office to pick up. Again, this is for student safety. Please make sure all of your approved pick up drivers have an official tag for their car.
Every Wednesday SCE will dismiss approximately 15 minutes early. Please ensure you have made arrangements to pick up or have someone home when the buses arrive. For student safety, buses will not drop off without an adult present. To ensure students are delivered on time for the entire route, bus drivers cannot wait for parents to get home, they must continue on their route. Students will be brought back to the school if there is no one home.
Thank you for understanding and making the appropriate arrangements and for helping us ensure the safety of all SCE students!
Report Cards
Silver Creek Elementary has made some changes to our report cards and informing families of their child's progress. Due to our adoption of a new, state approved Reading and Writing curriculum, we will move from Standards Based Reporting, which we have used in the past. Students will earn grades in each of the ILEARN tested domains.
Math: Number Sense, Computation and Algebraic Thinking, Geometry and Measurement, Data Analysis
ELA: Reading Foundations, Reading Comprehension, Writing
SCE will continue to follow assessment based grading, which means the students are only graded on assessments and their grade reflects their level of mastery. Students will still earn a numeric "grade." Grade 2 students will earn a 1,2, or 3 in each reporting domain. Grades 3-5 will earn a 1,2,3,4, or 5. Please see the attached for a breakdown of the numeric grades.
Technology Agreement
On this form, there is an optional insurance section. This is completely at your discretion. If you would like to opt into the insurance program we need to have your check payable to Silver Creek School Corporation (NOT Silver Creek Elementary) by the end of the week next week, Aug. 9th. You may also pay via Infinite Campus.
Free and Reduced Lunch Application
For the 2024-2025 school year, the price of breakfast is $2.05 and the price of lunch is $3.05. You can add money to your child's account through your parent portal.
We encourage families to apply for assistance for books and the lunch program. This can be done by printing this application (Espanol) and completely filling it out or by clicking on the link in your parent portal. Silver Creek Elementary is a Title I School Wide funded school. This means we receive money based on our percentage of students enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program. The federal money helps us with programs and personnel so we can better meet the needs of our students.
