MPVA Weekly Update
May 20 - 24, 2024
Dear Parents and Students,
I hope this newsletter finds everyone doing well after the unexpected storms that wreaked havoc on our city Thursday evening. If your family is in need of assistance, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/GUA5Gqr46mxbfD3a9
We will open our doors again tomorrow, Monday - May 20, 2024 at 8:00 AM. Our building has electricity/power and AC. Multiple walkthroughs have been conducted since Friday to ensure a safe return to school. It will be a Grey Day.
Our campus sustained minimal damage and was largely confined to tree limbs that came down. It is here that I want to give a shout out to one of our parents, Mr. Dawlett, who came to MPVA on Friday to break up the large limbs and prepare them for pick up. This was yet another example of what an amazing school community we have here at MPVA. Everyone pitches in when and how they can because this is where our children go (and grow). This act of initiative and concern for the safety of our kids is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Mr. Dawlett!
Again, if you need any assistance, please fill out this form, https://forms.gle/GUA5Gqr46mxbfD3a9, or reach out to me at jsarabia@houstonisd.org and include our Wrap Around Specialist, Ms. Perez-Williams at Brittany.PerezWilliams@houstonisd.org in your email.
We look forward to seeing our students back tomorrow!
Respectfully,
Mr. Sarabia
Academics are the mind of our school. Athletics are the heart of our school. Arts are the soul of our school. #WeAreMPVA
MPVA Updates
MPVA PTO Spirit Day at La Fresca
The PTO is hosting a Spirit Day this Tuesday at La Fresca at 5300 N. Braeswood Blvd. from 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM. Mention "Meyerland Middle School" and a portion of the proceeds will go to our school.
MPVA Traffic Maps
Attached below are MPVA Traffic Maps (English and Spanish) to help you navigate parking and traffic around our school. This year we have had two accidents involving MPVA students and cars. That is two students too many.
One of the accidents happened at the corner of Manhattan and Wigton and the other at the intersection between Manhattan and Willowbend.
Please help us keep all our students safe by following all posted signage around our school and using the attached maps to guide you with parking options.
We have been actively seeking Crossing Guard help since the Fall and were able to acquire help in the afternoon at the corner of Manhattan and Wigton. I also want to thank PTO member, Mr. LeBlanc, who has been helping us at that intersection all year during the morning and afternoon commutes. Some who have seen him day in and day out may think he works for HISD, however, he does this voluntarily and his help has been invaluable. Please let me know if we have any other parents who would like to help.
Finally, I want to caution parents against asking their children to meet them on the other side of Willowbend. That is a high-traffic and high-speed intersection. Finding areas within the neighborhood to designate as a pickup spot makes more sense. Many parents do this and it works.
Thank you all in advance for helping us take care of our students. #ItTakesAVillage.
Attendance Appeals
Attendance appeal hours were due on March 22, 2024. Students who have not completed their recovery time are encouraged to continue until all hours are completed.
We are in the process of notifying students who have recovery time during the second semester of school.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact D.Bolden (Counselor), K.Moody (Counselor), B. Perez (Wraparound Specialist), and Silva Alvarado (Attendance Clerk).
Respectfully,
The Attendance Committee
Attendance Recovery Tutorials
Attendance Recovery Tutorials are now available for students who need to recover attendance hours. Attendance Recovery will be held every Wednesday in May in the school library from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. This is a significant opportunity for them to catch up on any attendance recovery hours and improve their academic standing.
