Some thoughts for the starting school year
May 2024
The Value of the Month is Peace
Jessop Priorities
- To ensure our children are happy and we explain things well
- To ensure no child leaves our school unable to read
- To ensure children learn a broad vocabulary to access the world around them
- To enhance the educational experiences of diagnosed and undiagnosed children with SEND
A Message from Mr Baffoe
Welcome to the 3rd and final term of our school year. As we embark on the summer term, we look forward to a number of major school events. Sports day, the All Nations Carnival, School Journey, the Summer Fair, the Summer concert and much more. Reflecting back on the Spring term we are all inspired by past experiences and can only wonder at the things that are possible for us to achieve over the next few months.
Within our community, the Holy periods of Ramadan and Lent have occurred and many of our Muslim and Christian pupils, staff members and parents have spent recent weeks fasting, reflecting and finding ways to meet the needs of others within the community. Some of these efforts have been reflected in the activities that took place last term, Charitable donations, including sponsorship tasks, community events such as Dad's Club, fundraising (Red nose, Enterprise Day) and focus days such as International Women’s Day.
The values that we share clearly exist across all sections of our community. They also help us to create activities and opportunities that bring out the best in us all. We are proud that the value for the month of May (Peace) sparkles and shines at the centre of the experiences celebrated in this edition of our Newsletter.

Opening up a World of Possibilities - Cooking
On Thursday, Lion class had a visit from 3 lovely people from the Asian - inspired food brand 'itsu' who came in to teach the children how to prepare exciting food.
The year 4 children discussed the 5 food groups, the origins and benefits of various vegetables, and were taught the different chopping, grating and preparation techniques used in cooking them.
Each child chopped and grated their own vegetables and prepared a 'veggie box' to take home, along with loads of goodies from itsu.
'Best day ever' was the pupil's general appraisal of a really exciting, educational and delicious visit from itsu.
Dad's Club
Dad's Club: Building Bonds, One Adventure at a Time
Another fabulous session of Dad's Club took place on April 27th. Over 21 fathers and 30 children across the school came together to enjoy lunch and take part in a range of activities whilst making friends and sharing advice on a range of different topics. Dad’s Club is where fathers and their children come together for unforgettable bonding experiences! At Dads Club, we believe in fostering strong connections between dads and their kids while having fun. Whether you're looking to fix bikes, light a campfire, or embark on other exciting adventures, our club offers the perfect setting.
Join us for hands-on workshops where you'll learn valuable skills like bike repair, camp fire-building, and more, all while creating lasting memories with your little ones. Our friendly and supportive community is here to encourage dads and kids alike as they explore new hobbies and conquer challenges together.
Get ready to ignite your sense of adventure and strengthen your father-child bond at Jessop's Dads Club. Join us next time and start building memories that will last a lifetime. We are looking forward to the next session which takes place on Saturday May 25th from 12:00pm-2:00pm.
A massive thank you to all the families that came along and to Scott our volunteer leader for supplying everyone with a tasty spread of sandwiches and drinks for lunch, Coach Darral leading on games in the pitch and Mr Baffoe for organising the day and ensuring the logistics ran smoothly.Join us next time and start building memories that will last a lifetime. Look out for our next flyer for details.
Reading Cafe
At Jessop, we are committed to meeting the needs of all pupils to ensure that they make the best possible progress, which is why we have been running a Reading Cafe - mainly targeting Year groups two and three.
As part of our achieving excellence together we invited some children to attend our online Reading intervention program, Lexia, in our Jessop Reading Cafe. Lexia's approach is focused on sound methodology, engaging experiences, and continued acknowledgement of the value of each individual learner. By doing so, it is making literacy truly accessible for everyone.
The group have really enjoyed coming in and are all progressing through the levels whilst having great fun learning new skills. They have then been able to apply the learning to their reading, spelling and writing in class.
Keep Going for Gold Reading Cafe!
Year 6 - SATs
Good luck to all of our Year 6 children who are sitting their SATs this week. Just remember with practice, effort and determination you will achieve whatever you want to! A massive thank you to our Parents, Carers and Year 6 Team who have worked tirelessly to ensure that the children are well prepared for this week!
Our Year 6 children were invited to attend school earlier this week where a free breakfast was waiting for them, cereal, toast hot chocolate to mention a few things on the breakfast club menu. It was also a chance for the children to relax and unwind. With SATS week underway, children needed the encouragement to get through. A good breakfast whether at home or at school, and some motivational words at the start of each day made a wonderful start!

Curriculum Spotlight
This Month we Shine a Light on Science
Children are naturally curious. Science at primary school nurtures this curiosity and allows children to ask questions and develop the skills they need to answer those questions.
Primary science helps pupils to:
- Investigate problems.
- Learn how science works.
- Discover why science matters in the world.
Our science curriculum has been designed so that each unit can be related, through cross curricular links, to the Creative Curriculum topic taught each term. By providing these links, the intent is that children gain real life examples and context to their Science learning.
Each unit begins by researching a prominent scientist in that particular field. Children research the work of the scientist, how they became a scientist and the impact of their work. This links to our possibilities driver, the aim of which is to provide children with a feeling that a career in Science is possible for anyone with an interest and one that they can achieve.
Key vocabulary is taught throughout each unit and referenced in each lesson with children given the opportunity to use the vocabulary in context independently. In addition to the unit vocabulary, there are 6 ‘Word of the Week’ which have been identified and selected to help in the process of closing the vocabulary gap.
How we teach Science
- Each unit consists of 6 lessons.
- 3 lessons are taught on alternate weeks for a whole afternoon
- The final 3 are taught on a Science Day at the end of the half term.
- The first lesson involves researching the work and impact of the scientist for the unit. An introductory hook activity is also included to engage the children and introduce term’s learning in a practical way.
- As we teach science through an enquiry based approach, each unit includes a practical investigation.
- The remaining lessons in each half term are used to cover the skills and knowledge outlined in the national curriculum statements.

Attendance
Central to raising standards in all schools and ensuring all pupils can fulfil their potential, is the need for children to attend school regularly to benefit from their education.
There is a strong link between good learning, high achievement, rapid progress and developing good social skills with excellent attendance.
We want to take this opportunity to outline our expectations for school attendance this academic year.
If your child arrives at school from 9.01am they will be marked as LATE, if they arrive after 9.30am they will be classed as “late after the register is closed” and their attendance is classed as absent for the morning session. As the registers would have already been returned to the Department for Education.
Regular poor punctuality can also have a negative effect on your child’s attendance as well as their academic learning. Being 6 minutes late each day equals 30 minutes of missed learning every week.
If your child’s attendance drops below 90%, we will need to share our concerns with the Local Authority Education Welfare Officer at Lambeth Council.

Raising a Concern
It is important to us that any concerns or questions you may have are dealt with as efficiently as possible. The structure we have in place is designed to do just that.
The structure
1) Your first port of call is -Your child’s class teacher
(email via the admin team to request a meeting)
2) You may contact the leader of your child’s phase
This includes issues regarding communication and organisation
(email via the admin team to request a meeting)
Should you be dissatisfied with the handling or outcome…
3) You may raise your concerns with Mr Baffoe
(email via the admin team to request a meeting outlining the nature for the purpose of the meeting)
Leaders are required to share items (as appropriate) with Mr Baffoe on a weekly basis, even if the matter is being handled by them.
We request that you do not field your concerns to FoJ but instead work directly with the school staff as outlined above.
