Lynx Lane Campus Celebrates American Founders' Month
The Month of September 2018 will mark the first annual observance of "American Founders". American Founders' month offers the opportunity for students to participate in activities related to the nation's founding fathers, who were instrumental in crafting historical documents that provide for individual liberty and representative government.
In each of our September Newsletters, we will feature one or two of our seven founding fathers, be sure to check back each week to learn more information.
John Adams
"Before becoming President in 1797, John Adams built his reputation as a blunt-speaking man of independent mind. A fervent patriot and brilliant intellectual, Adams served as a delegate from Massachusetts to the Continental Congress between 1774 and 1777, as a diplomat in Europe from 1778 to 1788, and as vice president during the Washington administration."
John Adams passed away on July 4th, 1826.
For more information on John Adams please visit https://millercenter.org/president/adams .
Benjamin Franklin
" He was an American printer and publisher, author, inventor and scientist, and diplomat. One of the foremost of the Founding Fathers, Franklin helped draft the Declaration of Independence and was one of its signers, represented the United States in France during the American Revolution, and was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention. He made important contributions to science, especially in the understanding of electricity, and is remembered for the wit, wisdom, and elegance of his writing."
He passe away on April 17th 1790.

OSS to Celebrate Constitution Day
On September 17, 1787, the delegates to the Constitutional Convention met for the last time to sign the document they had created, the US Constitution. OSMS students will observe this important day in our nation's history in their social studies classes.
Celebrate Freedom Week
In addition to Constitution Day, Celebrate Freedom Week is an official holiday in Florida schools from September 24-28th. It is designed to emphasize the teaching of our country's origins with an emphasis on the founding documents. Please be advised School is OPEN this week.
STEM Art Club Completes their first project!
The STEM Art club worked on their first project the last two weeks with oil resistant paintings. Students painted with acrylic on thick watercolor paper. After it dried, they applied dish soap on top in various designs. Mrs. Estes spray painted the pieces black. She showed them the chemical reaction the soap made with the spray paint. After the soap was washed off, it revealed the acrylic paint underneath!
1st Semester Club Schedule
Club Re-Sign Ups will continue next week! Students may check the lists posted outside the media center for any clubs with availability. If your student would like to withdraw from a club they may see Mrs. Sturm.

2018-2019 Science Fair Weekly
Orcas,
Our 3rd week will be focusing on writing procedures and figuring out how we will analyze our data. We need to know what we plan on doing each step of the way before we can perform it. The wording of the procedures is very important! A poorly written procedure, something that is vague and left up for interpretation, can create disastrous results. Other people may misinterpret what the steps are and can lead to unsafe conditions. It is this reason why your procedures need to be clear so that everyone knows what you are working with and how to handle any situation. Safety is important, we need to address ALL hazards that can occur. Even if you have used power tools many many times it is still a safety hazard.
We need to record what are proper ways to handle all tools! The procedures and forms are part of the Research Plan. This Research Plan will be sent to county for approval. The county members read the procedures, if they suspect something unsafe or not properly defined and addressed they can forbid the project until proper forms are filled out or until the procedures are made clearer. This even goes into how we will analyze our data. Way before we get the data we need to have an idea of what data we will gain and how to analyze it. Students are not allowed to work on their project until county approves of their project! We just need to know what your plans are for the analysis. If you are concerned as to what county needs or any part of the science fair please do not hesitate to contact us!
Go Orcas!
