Friday 5th July
Principals Message
The Term 2 holidays are here, and although students are on a break to refresh and recharge, we understand and appreciate the ‘juggle’ of time and work commitments for some parents. I do hope you get some time to enjoy a few ‘sleep-ins’ and leisure activities with your whanau.
We had a magnificent Matariki celebration last Thursday, and we thank the many staff and volunteers for their contribution to making this happen. We welcomed over 200 members of our community onto the school grounds with a beautifully cooked hangi and a variety of items to both entertain and inform our audience. Thank you to the community for supporting this event and giving our students another opportunity to shine on the big screen and on stage!
We finished today with our ‘Riverdale Has Got Talent’ Right Choice Day. More information is below, but what a day! It is so good to see brave tamariki get up on stage and showcase the many skills and talents we have across our kura. Even some of our teachers at Riverdale School performed in front of the school to model bravery and risk-taking in their own talents! Well done to all performers who practised throughout the term, so they were ready to present! Ka rawe!
Next term, staff and students will work together to present our School Production for our community at the Regent Theatre on Wednesday, September 25th (Week 10). Students will use the Technology Process to design wearable Art pieces to wear on stage. I am also looking forward to the Dance and Drama elements that students will be learning and the boost in confidence they will experience performing in front of family and friends.
Finally, we look forward to connecting with whanau early next term for Kanohi ki te Kanohi parent interviews. Please take the time to make an appointment with your whanau teacher to discuss the HERO reporting tool data and your child's next learning steps.
Enjoy the holiday break, and we look forward to welcoming you back for an exciting term 3.

Welcome
To our new students: We wish you happy days at Riverdale School
Piako Tahi - Kade Jankiewicz & Manawa Do
Team Celebration - Pounamu Atawhai
Guess Who?
This term a group of students from Pounamu Atawhai have been developing their artistic skills around observational drawings and portraiture. After exploring drawing skills like shading and blending with pencil, we then looked at the dimensions of our faces before adding colour. This took a number of sessions but the perseverance and focus on slowing down to achieve high quality outcomes paid off.
I wonder if you can tell who’s behind these pictures.
Basketball
Congratulations to our Riverdale School Basketball Teams this season. Special thank you to our wonderful coaches, we appreciate the time and effort that you have given.
Kanohi ki te Kanohi - Parent Teacher Interviews
Kanohi ki te kanohi - Parent Teacher interviews will be happening in Week 2 next term. These are an opportunity to meet with your child's teacher and discuss your child's mid year progress and next learning steps. We strongly encourage you to make a booking on the HERO app. Please note these are not for Piako Tahi - as they are done throughout the year and the teacher will contact you as they are needed.
There will an early finish of 12:30 pm on Tuesday the 30th of July for all students.
Children's University - Massey Discovery Day
The Children’s University group had an amazing visit to Massey University yesterday.
After weaving their harakeke they headed to the School of Agriculture and Environment. They looked at earthworms under a microscope, made a dam for the Manawatū River, and looked at what happened after a volcano erupted.
Their next visit was to the Veterinary School which is a hit every year. First they visited the hospital where they intubated a fake dog, and gave it CPR, looked at x-rays of a variety of animals and listened to their own heartbeat with a stethoscope. They also got to wear the Vets long plastic gloves and try to deliver a ‘fake’ calf.
Wildbase was another hit. The injured ruru and kiwi were amazing to see and we all felt sorry for the turtle that was operated on after it was attacked by a dog. They go to see what the animals ate while at Wildbase and how to pick up a bird that may be injured.
After that it was off to the Recreation Centre for Dodgeball, multisports and a dance off with another school - which they decided they won!
A big thank you to our parent helpers Shane and Mike for coming with us. We had a wonderful day full of fun and learning.
Ngā Whetu o te Pō, An evening under the stars celebrating Puana/Matariki
What an amazing night! It was lovely to have so many of the community join us for this special event showcasing this term’s learning about our local area with performances from Ngā Tewhatewha and Te Puawai. Finishing with a farewell to Pā Jack, who has been pivotal in growing Te Ao Māori at Riverdale School for many, many years, made the whole night even more special.
A massive thank you to our hāngī crew who were hard at work behind the scenes over days and one very early morning to provide a delicious meal for us all before the show. Well done to everyone who helped out to make the event one of the best yet!
We would also like to thank PTS (Brent and Maddy Speirs) for providing the truck for our performers and to Speedy Signs for the TV.
Manawatia a Matariki!
Special thank you's...

Ki o Rahi Tournament
The annual Ki-O-Rahi tournament hosted by Kelly’s Sports and Whakapai Hauora was another huge hit with our tamariki.
Again this year Mr Carter and Pa Chris trained our two teams to take part in the tournament. This year there were around 30 different teams entered. The venue was changed at the last moment due to difficult weather, but the kids were not phased. Our two teams headed by bus to Manawaroa Park on Wednesday Week 9.
Both teams played hard and with excellent teamwork and sportsmanship. The Kahurangi team went through the round-robin undefeated and in second place on points. They played Te Kura O Wairau in the Semi Final winning 29 -15. We had a hard-fought final against College Street, who took us out 15-10.
Well done to all students involved and a huge thank you to all the whānau who came down to support on the day!
Flippa Ball
Congratulations to the Riverdale Orcas Flippa Ball team on a successful season. A special thank you to our wonderful coaches Ngaire and Katie, we are so lucky to have people like you supporting our tamariki.
Right Choice Day - Riverdale's Got Talent
For Right Choice Day this term we celebrated with the Riverdale’s Got Talent show. We were treated to performances from the Manawatu Overtones chorus, Andrew the Magician and The Palmerston North Brass Band.
This was a great chance for many of our students and family to share their talents in a range of categories including dance, magic, singing, musical instruments and gymnastics. Our judges had the hard job of picking the most outstanding performances. Congratulations to all of our winners.
We would like to thank Vijay and the team at the 4 Square on Maxwell's Line for donating the amazing prizes including a pair of Apple Earpods, In-store vouchers and games for the whole family.
