AMS Weekly Update
Monday, October 7 - Friday, October 11, 2024
Dear Adams Middle School Families,
As we embrace the changing season and our fall sports season begins to wind down, we want to take a moment to celebrate the hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship our athletes have shown. Whether it’s the exciting last-minute wins or the teamwork displayed on and off the field, it’s been an incredible season so far!
As our students wrap up their NWEA testing, it’s hard to believe we’re already approaching the end of the marking period!
We would like to remind you of some important upcoming dates, particularly Parent-Teacher Conferences, which will be held virtually. Below, you will find a presentation with links to sign up for time slots with each teacher. The conferences are scheduled for October 16 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM and October 17 from 3:10 to 6:10 PM.
Additionally, please note that the marking period ends on October 25th. We encourage you to check Parent Connect regularly to ensure your student is submitting their work to their teachers.
We look forward to connecting with you!

Counseling Department
Hello Adams Parents/Guardians!
In September, the Counselors had the pleasure of visiting all 6th grade classes, as well as 7th and 8th grade ELA classes. During our presentations, we covered key topics such as how students can sign up to see us, limits of confidentiality, mandated reporting, the 988 crisis helpline, our Google Classroom pages, and other important information. It was wonderful connecting with all of the students in their classrooms! Ms. Lentz is excited to launch her Lunch Bunch for students in October—details for sign-up are already available in the student announcements.
October is also Substance Abuse Prevention Month. Please take a moment to review the attached informational flyer at your convenience.
As a reminder, here is the contact information for your student’s Counselor:

Scientists are deeply engaged in the inquiry process. How can so much water fit on a penny? Is it magic, or is it a natural phenomenon?
A little Twinning Day fun!
Upcoming for 6th Graders:
Math:
Students will continue exploring rational numbers, focusing on understanding and ordering them, as well as mastering absolute values.
ELA:
We’re deep into genres and reading strategies aimed at building stronger readers. Students are currently reading fiction stories, analyzing key elements such as setting, characters, and plot, and examining how these elements shape the theme and overall impact of the story.
Social Studies:
This month, students are diving into the 5 Themes of Geography. Next week’s focus will be on location, where they’ll practice using latitude and longitude to find absolute locations on a map and learn how to describe places using relative location.
Science:
As students wrap up their inquiry skills, they are now learning how to design and conduct experiments. Next week, they will apply scientific principles to conduct their own experiment using hoop gliders!
Extracurriculars:
Sixth graders are encouraged to join a sport or club!
- Clubs: Student Council, Pep Club, Newspaper, Bowling, and more.
- Sports: Boys’ basketball tryouts are on October 23 and 24, and girls’ basketball starts in January. (Google Classroom code: brtrww5)
Reminder: A physical is required to participate.
Boys’ soccer, girls’ volleyball, and cross-country are currently in full swing! Students are welcome to cheer on their peers with proper ID and parent supervision.
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL):
Teachers are also emphasizing social-emotional learning, helping students build relationships, make responsible decisions, and manage their emotions.
Art Class
As the vibrant colors of fall surround us, we’re excited to share what’s happening in our art classes this month!
Throughout October, students will deepen their understanding of the Elements of Art by applying their knowledge to create captivating pieces using various mediums. This hands-on approach will not only sharpen their artistic abilities but also help them develop a stronger appreciation for the essential building blocks of art.
Our focus will be on enhancing foundational drawing skills. Students will practice using contour lines and value to capture what they observe around them or bring their creative ideas to life. They've already begun exploring techniques like the Grid Method to improve their observational drawing. Be sure to check out some of the impressive artwork from Joelle Demars and Nick Martin on display in the classroom!
In the spirit of the season, students also created Zentangle Pumpkins, combining intricate patterns with the festive feel of fall. This activity fosters both creativity and mindfulness, as students design unique pumpkins that celebrate the beauty of autumn. Be sure to check out the impressive work of artists Clara Ruchala, Dycarious Robinson, and Skylar Royal!
In addition to developing technical skills, our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) focus this month is on creativity. We’ll explore how to view challenges as opportunities for artistic growth, encouraging students to find creative and thoughtful solutions to any perceived mistakes or obstacles in their work. This approach not only builds resilience but also enhances their artistic expression.
We’re excited to see the creativity and inspiration that will flourish in our art rooms this October! Stay tuned for more updates and examples of student artwork as the month unfolds.
Happy creating!
