Eagle Express
February 20-23, 2024
Principal's Corner
Dear Eagles,
As we navigate the educational journey at Woodlawn Academy, we are guided by a commitment to prepare our students for their place in a broader, ever-evolving world. I am reminded of a story told to me by my troop commander about Hannibal Barca's strategic selection of his soldiers for the daunting traverse over the Italian Alps to confront the Romans, what leaders look for in a good soldier, and how it relates to becoming a leader themselves.
Hannibal, known for his bold and unconventional strategies, demonstrated a profound understanding of readiness and adaptability. By observing his men at the river, Hannibal chose those who, even in moments of respite, remained vigilant and focused on the path ahead. Hannibal's use of war elephants, a symbol of strength and the willingness to undertake bold ventures, underscores our belief in nurturing the courage to face the unknown.
This principle of discernment and focus underpins our approach at Woodlawn. We strive to cultivate academic excellence in our students and the resilience and awareness to navigate challenges, akin to Hannibal's men who kept their eyes open for both threats and opportunities.
In our quest to prepare our young learners for their future roles, we emphasize the importance of focusing on what truly matters despite the myriad distractions and more accessible paths that may present themselves. The wider world, with its complexities and challenges, demands a readiness to adapt, persevere, and seize opportunities.
As a community, let us commit to guiding our students in keeping their "eyes open," ready to meet the world with resilience, creativity, and an unyielding spirit of exploration. Together, we can ensure that our students are prepared for the journey ahead and equipped to lead and inspire with determination and unity.

Where Words Fail, Music Speaks
An important element of the way we do school is to take our learning and put it into action. The same is modeled in each of our students' PYPX projects.
Justine and Oscar are focusing on piano music for their PYPX project. They decided that a short performance of piano music for a group of 3rd graders is how they wanted to share their love of piano and take their learning into action. Oscar played a short piano piece and led a reflection, together with their mentor, our very own choir director and music teacher, Mrs. Rogers. 3rd grade students reflected how they felt beforeand after listening to the music.
Hello, Friends!
What do you do when you are passionate about Hello Kitty and the rest of the Sanrio culture? You dive into a deep inquiry through the Exhibition Inquiry Project, of course! Two fans of Sanrio spent their PYPX project time learning more about the influence of Sanrio. Their hope is to get others more passionate about it, too! After much reflection, they agreed that with permission to create a bulletin board on campus, students could learn more about Sanrio and develop an interest thereafter.
