Jaguar News Journal
September 16th - 20th
From Our Principal
Dear JWE Families,
Hello and Happy Sunday! I hope this edition of our Jaguar News Journal finds you well and enjoying your weekend!
As a reminder, Tuesday of this week is our Fall Picture Day! We've changed photo companies so the process is a bit different this year. No flyers were sent home ahead of picture day. Instead, all students will be photographed and will receive a card to bring home with a QR code and access code on it. Please use that card to view your child's photo and place orders! Orders will be shipped directly to your home!
On Friday of this week, JWES will commemorate the 210th anniversary of the writing of the poem "The Star Spangled Banner" by Francis Scott Key in 1814. We will gather outside in the bus lane by the flagpole for this event and will sing the National Anthem as a whole school. This is an event led by our music teacher, Ms. Houff and we are looking forward to it. She has been working in music classes so far this year to help students learn the lyrics. The Turner Ashby Chamber Singers will come over and perform for us as well. Keep an eye out on the JWE Facebook page for photos of this event! It's always a favorite!
Finally, please be aware that RCPS has had some concerns and issues with younger students being unsupervised at high school games and events. All families are asked to be sure that if your child is at a football game that he/she is both accomanied by and actively supervised by a responsible adult. For elementary aged students, the preference is that your child sit with your family.
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and thank you for your continued partnership and support!
Sincerely,
Sara Hammill

Student Birthdays at JWES - Important Update
Families sometimes like to send birthday treats for a class on/around their student's birthday. We've historically served the treat to the class in the cafeteria after or during the students lunch period that day. Due to an increase in student allergies and some other factors we are changing this practice.
If you/your family are interested in bringing a birthday snack or treat in to celebrate your student, please work with his/her classroom teacher. The teacher will serve these snacks/treats in the classroom during a convenient time that day. Please contact your child's teacher to let them know you will be bringing/dropping off a birthday snack ahead of time so they can plan for it. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!
Internet and Online Safety for Children & Families
Keeping our kids safe in an online world is another challenge we face as we raise and teach children during a digital age. This week’s topic is related to how we can work to promote safe use of the internet & social media. I’ve included articles below that can help you be and stay informed as well as some resources that you may find beneficial as you monitor your child's internet and social media access. One resource linked below is from Common Sense Media. This is a great resource as it rates movies, games and other digital content for parents to help them make informed decisions as to what is appropriate for their child and family.

School attendance is critical to student success. Patterns built in PreK, K & 1st grades can impact a student for the rest of their lives. We've included some graphics below but ask that you review the first one fully. A link to a full-sized version can be found here: Attendance in the Early Grades
Title I Annual Meeting for JWES Families
John Wayland is now a Title I School and this is our first year with this designation. This is exciting news as it means we gain resources to support student success! As part of the Title I process, we will host an Annual Meeting at which we explain what it means to be a Title I School and what our goals are for this year. We will also go over our Title I Family Engagement Plan with those present!
We'd love for Parents/Guardians to plan to attend this 30-45 minute meeting on Thursday, September 26th at 6pm in our school library. We look forward to meeting with you!
Recess Friends!
You're Invited!
JWES Parents & Guardians are invited to attend a Live Broadcast & Fireside Chat with the First Lady of Virginia and author of The Anxious Generation, Dr. Jonathan Haidt, taking place on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at Mountain View Elementary School. This event offers a unique opportunity for families to connect with our division and learn how limiting social media and cell phone use can restore childhood and play.
The event is a live broadcast to participating schools across the Commonwealth, followed by facilitated community conversations about the dangers of technology.
RCPS Inspire Awards
Counselor Corner
The School Counselor role in the school environment supports ALL students through classroom guidance lessons. The next level of support we provide includes:
- Addressing food & other basic needs
- Prevention and skill building small groups
- Individual short-term check-ins
Thank you to all of you who returned the "Give & Receive" paper forms and electronic survey. It helps us know what your needs are and what resources may be available. JWES is grateful to work together with community partners to provide weekend food and snacks to students and families in need and delivery began last week. Special thanks to Bridgewater Retirement Community, Crosslink Community Church, Bridgewater United Methodist Church, and Bridgewater Presbyterian Church who support our weekend Food Bag Program. Students and families receiving food bags have been notified but please reach out to us if you are interested in participating as we have some limited spots available.
Small groups usually are a mix of 4-8 students that meet weekly, sometimes over lunch, to build relationships, practice social skills, and prevent common problems elementary school students might deal with. Some examples of topics covered are sportsmanship, friendship, self-esteem, worry/anxiety, and executive functioning skills. Small groups are run based on the needs reported by teachers/staff and families and are run throughout the year, depending on school counselors schedules, usually beginning in October or November. If your child is chosen to take part in a small counseling group, you will be notified with a letter and opportunity to opt-out.
Individual short-term check-ins are with students on an as needed basis. School Counselors have many of the same skills and training as licensed counselors in the community, but are unable to provide long-term counseling due to time constraints and large caseloads. Mrs. Strite and Ms. K use conflict resolution, solution-focused counseling, and check-in/check-out models to help students that have personal, emotional, or relational problems that get in the way of learning throughout the school day. We work hand-in-hand with teachers, administrators, and behavior support staff to help struggling students.
As always, please reach out to Ms. K (PreK/1/3/5) or Mrs. Strite (K/2/4) if you have any concerns you think we might be able to help with. Thanks for all you do to encourage your student to have a positive relationship with the staff at school that support them!
