A Caring, Curious and Connected community of learners.
Principals' Message
Dear Crossett Brook Community Members:
We hope everyone enjoyed our Open House on Wednesday evening. We really enjoyed seeing everyone here and getting to meet more families. Duane and I couldn't be happier than to be a part of this community and we really love having events to showcase the amazing work our students and staff are doing here.
This is the last newsletter prior to Halloween, so please check out my info post below on costumes and goodies. We love seeing everyone dressed up (if they choose) as long as costumes prioritize safety and adhere to school expectations.
Please consider signing up for a Jump Rope account (with your student(s)' log in information, so that you can see grades and feedback that students are getting. We prioritize real time feedback as that is the best way for students to know how they are doing and how they can improve on their work. See the Jump Rope parent explanation letter linked below.
Spirit week is next week is the week of October 28th. Please check out the flyer created by our Spirit and Activities committee. Dress your best for the each theme to earn points for your team.
Sincerely,
Jen and Duane

Reminders to keep in mind.
A note about appropriate clothing
In order to continue to promote a safe school environment, we are requesting that any clothing that depicts illegal items for minors be left at home. Additionally, we are requesting that clothing not be objectively offensive in nature. If students are wearing these clothing items, they may be asked by the administration to change or cover up the clothing item.
Additionally, the weather is getting cooler. At this time of year, we see many kids come in without cool weather clothing. Each team spends time outside throughout the day, whether for team recess, walks or lunch recess. Students are outside for anywhere from 10 minutes to 30 minutes sometimes. Please consider making sure students have proper cold weather attire as the months get colder.
A note about homework and grades
If you're curious about whether your student has homework, the first place to check is Google Classroom with your student. It can be a great opportunity to talk about what's going on in school and what your student is learning as well. Your student can sign into their account and show you what's going on.
Below is the Jump Rope parent explanation letter. Please check it out and sign up for a Jump Rope login to get up to date grades and feedback on your student(s)' progress.
After school detentions vs. lunch detentions
In an effort to continue our responsiveness to behavior, we will be starting after school detentions one day a week on Wednesdays. The detentions will be reserved for major safety infractions or infractions that are significantly disruptive to the learning environment. After school detentions will begin, as necessary, Wednesday October 9. If a student receives an after school detention, the notice will state information about length of time as well as transportation possibilities.
We do use lunch detentions as well in order to process more immediate infractions in the moment. We try to keep those consequences on the day of or day immediately following as best as possible. We believe that immediate/timely response is best in addressing student behavioral learning.

Halloween Costume Expectations
We love seeing everyone in their costumes as long as everyone is safe and expectations are followed. Here are the things that students CANNOT bring/wear to school.
1. Masks/Face coverings
2. Weapons
3. Inflatables
4. Culturally insensitive costumes
If a student's costume does not follow these expectations, is considered unsafe or offensive, they may be asked to remove it. If a student chooses not to follow this expectation, we may need to call home.

Health Office Updates
Wash hand, cover your sneezes and coughs and stay home when sick!
As we head into the colder months, we hear a lot about protecting our health and the health of those around us. Here’s a list of some simple ways to stay safe:
1. Wash your hands often with soap and water.
2. Avoid contact with others if you or they are sick.
3. Cover your coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue.
4. Consider wearing a mask, especially if you or people you are with are at higher risk of serious illness.
Learn about this year’s vaccines and make a plan to get your shots.

Halloween Movie Night for Ages 5-12!
Hello all!
My name is Susannah Smith, and I am a senior member of the National Honors Society at Harwood Union High School. On October 27th, we are hosting a children's Halloween movie night in the Harwood Library for kids aged 5 through 12.
From 4 o'clock to 6 o'clock, parents can drop off their kids with us and we will have snacks for them to enjoy while watching a Halloween movie.
I am emailing you to ask if you would be willing to share this event with the kids and parents at your school! We are doing lot's of advertising already, but it would be amazing if you could also share this through your connections!
