Important Information and Action Items for Advisors
Math Placement Changes
- Math is using the ALEKS assessment for the summer, but students will have the option to take the paper assessment on campus in the fall.
- The first exam will be a practice exam and so will not be proctored, after that, all attempts will be proctored by Respondus.
- A score of 76 or higher will exempt MATH 1113
- A score of 62 or higher will exempt MATH 1101.
- This is a temporary policy for summer 2020 because of the pandemic.
- Details can be found at the Math website https://www.math.uga.edu/undergraduate-placement and Mike has updated the Orientation OneNote to reflect the changes.
Orientation Reminders
This Week
- Incoming Fall Transfer Students are advised.
- Incoming Fall first years have scheduled their small group sessions. Based on the schedule we received from admissions, our advising loads for June/July look great!
Fourth of July Break
- Admissions will not be holding small groups for students the week of – June 29th through July 3rd.
- If you'd like to take the week off, that's great. Just let your supervisor know and please Cc Kellee.
Summer Orientation Advising No-Show Policy
Mike has added this information to the Orientation OneNote.
When a student no-shows, advisors should attempt to contact the student.
If the student replies quickly and the appointment can be pushed back to later that day or the next day, to a time that doesn’t interfere with something already scheduled, the advisor can go ahead and reschedule themselves without informing Kellee (if they would like to).
If the student does not reply quickly or needs to be rescheduled later, the advisor should inform Kellee and Kellee will handle the rescheduling. If the advisor is already booked, the student will be seen by Mike.
If the student does not reply at all, the advisor should inform Kellee but no further action is needed.
If the student no-shows repeatedly and the advisor does not want to deal with it anymore, let Kellee know and she will have Mike follow-up with the student.
The overall intent of the policy is that Kellee needs to know who has and hasn’t been advised, and will assume someone HAS been advised unless notified otherwise.
Orientation Intake Form Reminder
When Kellee schedules orientation students, she tells them that if they haven’t completed the intake survey yet, they must do it today. If they do, it will appear in SAGE by the morning of advising.
However, if it is one day before their appointment and an advisor wants the intake information, email Kellee at kelleeg@uga.edu. If the student has completed it, she can send you their answers.
Don't forget to put out those appointments! - Our incoming transfers are eager!
A number of our incoming fall transfer students completed their modules immediately and are ready for advising, so please make sure to schedule out at least a solid week in advance so Kellee can assign them to you.
We'll likely be through advising the vast majority of our transfers prior to June! This is what everyone was hoping for, and it will make June and July much easier!
OL Registration Help
- Orientation Leaders are now available to help incoming students with registration questions.
- Kellee has posted the O.L. registration information on our Franklin College webpage: https://osas.franklin.uga.edu/registration-assistance-advisor-drop-hours
Advisors and Registration Help
- As the summer progresses and courses fill, it's likely that our students will need a little extra advising help around registration. Admissions has created OL registration help hours, but as you know, OLs can't answer advising questions. For that reason, Admissions has asked advisors to staff break-out rooms during registration help hours to answer advising-related questions. Katherine and Jenny are taking some of these hours, but if other Franklin advisors would be willing to help answer advising-related question, that would be awesome.
- Here you can sign up for these individual dates in June and July. Please feel free to sign up for more than one date.
- If you would like to assist, please plan to attend a short training (about 30 minutes). There will be one at 11:30am on Tuesday, May 26 and 4:00pm on Thursday, May 28. Here is the Zoom meeting link: https://zoom.us/j/95298315324.
- Finally, here is a link for students with a list of all registration assistance hours this summer. It's being shared via email with FY students and on Admissions social media as well, but please feel free to share the May help hours with any transfer student you work with.
International Student Orientation FAQs
- The Office of Global Engagement has shared with advisors an excellent FAQ document related to advising incoming international students. I've attached it to this email.
