The Buzz
Spring Term - 21st March2024
Message from the Head of School
We have had such a busy and exciting spring term here at HISN with Paul Geraghty visiting, The Science Dome, Science Week, Neurodiversity week, Parent Consultations, showcase events, The Easter Bunny Bounce and so much more! No wonder everyone is feeling tired!
Thank you for all the parental support we receive as a school. As an outstanding school our offer is excellent and this relies on exceptional parental involvement which we are lucky enough to have!
Thank you to everyone that has made a purchase from the Amazon Wishlists for year groups. We are really grateful and the children are so excited when parcels arrive.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all our wonderful staff at HISN who make being outstanding possible. Everyone works so hard to ensure every child has the best educational experiences. The leadership team have completed our monitoring visits in all classes and I am so proud to share with you how amazing teaching and learning is here. From Nursery to Year 2 we set such high expectations for learning and behaviour and our children never disappoint.
Reminders:- There are no clubs running next week at HISN. Keep a check on the Calendar of Events - Summer term, this is a live document and will be updated if anything changes, the link for the calendar is on our website and also under 'Useful Links' at the end of this newsletter. The last day for our nursery children is next Wednesday and the rest of the school finishes at 1.20pm next Thursday.
A final reminder to ensure you are parking safely when dropping your children and picking them up. We have received evidence of families parking on double yellow lines and this makes it unsafe for our children to cross the road. We have notified the parking enforcement team and they will be making regular visits to help keep our children safe.
Have a lovely weekend.

Reporting a Child's Illness
The NHS has produced a very handy set of guidance for parents to decide if their child is too ill for school - link below.
When leaving a message that your child is absent you must provide full details of their illness as opposed to "unwell", in this case the office will phone you to seek clarification of the illness.
If your child has been sick or has an upset stomach, they MUST remain at home for 48 hours following the last bout of sickness or diarrhoea. The office will automatically sign your child out for two days so you do not need to call the school to confirm they are out on day 2.
If in doubt please call the office. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

🟨 Nursery
We have had such an active week in Nursery. We started our week helping Mr Quirk to plant small trees and bushes in our Nursery playground. We knew what we needed to do because we had read the focus book 'Eddie's Garden and How to Make Things Grow'. We knew that they needed to be planted in a hole in the earth that was big enough for the plant's roots. We helped Mr Quirk pat down the earth to secure the plants so they wouldn't fall over in the wind and watered them. We are so excited to see how much they grow over the Easter holiday. We will keep you updated.
We also all bounced to raise money as we were visited by the Easter Bunny. We all thought the Bunny had heard about how beautiful our garden is becoming. We loved being together and raising money by having such fun. The Easter Bunny left us stickers and craft activities that we are going to do next week in the run up to Easter (Thank you HISNA). What a happy week!
Time to talk - Nursery
We all know how important talking at home is for exposing children to a wide range of vocabulary and ideas. This all helps them with their reading and to become future writers. Each week we will share an idea with you for 'talk homework' with your child.
We have been thinking about 'Spring' this week and starting to plant seeds ready to grow in our garden after Easter. At home please ask your child what we have been growing in school. What did the plant need to grow? How long do you think it will take for the plants to grow? Please add any photos of your gardening to tapestry so we can share them with the class.
🟥 Reception
Our focus text this week is 'Eddie's Garden.' We have been talking about growing and gardening as we start preparing our garden for planting lots of plants and vegetables. We labelled the different parts of the plant; roots, stem, leaves and petals and talked about what each part of the plant does. We also talked about what plants need in order for them to grow. We planted a bean as a class and are going to look after it and watch it grow over time.
We also enjoyed the Easter Bunny Bounce, meeting the Easter Bunny and completing a bouncing challenge.
Phonics: We have continued to recap all of the sounds that we have learnt so far. We have learnt the new sounds 'sh' 'ch' and 'th' and have been building words using these sounds. We have learnt that these have 2 letters but make one sound. Our handwriting letters are y, u and i.
Maths - This week we have been learning about sorting objects into two different groups. We talked about how we could sort the objects based on colour or size. We have also started talking about odd and even numbers.

🟦 Year 1
We have begun a new focus book this week called ‘Handa’s Surprise’ by Eileen Brown. It is set in a village of the Luo tribe in south-west Kenya, and tells the story of a girl called Handa, who wants to surprise her friend, Akeyo, with seven delicious fruits. This week we have been focusing on making predictions, based on the book’s front cover. We have been thinking about where the story might be set, who might the main characters be, and what might happen in the story.
In maths, we have continued to use our knowledge of place value and number lines to estimate where numbers might be placed on a blank number line. We identified where the number lines began and ended, where the halfway points were, and whether the number lines were counting in ones or tens. We then used our number lines to help us find numbers that were one more and one less than a given number within 50, focusing on the direction we ‘jumped’ depending on whether we were finding one more or one less.
This week in science, we have been studying the different parts of a tree and their importance in maintaining its healthy growth. We then studied various trees within the school grounds before using our knowledge to label our own tree. We learnt that the bark is rough surface which protects the tree, and the crown supports the tree and carries water around it.
We have been comparing two countries from different continents this week in geography. We have been looking at the similarities and differences between Kenya and the UK, focusing on the countries’ landscapes, foods, clothing and homes, paying particular attention to the weather patterns of both countries, why these occur, and the impact this has on the environment and habitat of those who live there.
In computing, we have been exploring how to group objects to answer questions. We have been comparing groups by thinking about their similarities and differences, before recording our findings and sharing these with our friends.
We have been developing our rolling technique when performing barrel, straight and forward rolls, focusing on keeping the same shape throughout the roll. We have also been developing our ball skills using a racket, moving our feet to the ball and ensuring we stand sideways on, pushing the ball back using the centre of the racket face.
🟩 Year 2
Tuesday brought much excitement as the Easter Bunny visited and we completed our minute sponsored bounce. Thanks for HISNA for organising Year 2 loved meeting the Easter Bunny.
In English we have been learning about recounts. We have thought about features of a recount, focusing on writing in the past tense as well as in chronological order. We have written a recount of our school day and look forward to writing a recount of our trip to Wisley next week.
In Maths we have continued to look at a range of measures and have been learning about capacity this week. We discussed terms such as volume and learnt to read scales accurately to measure amounts of liquid.
We are very excited for our upcoming visit to Wisley on Friday. Please try to be at school promptly on Friday morning so we can prepare the children for the day ahead. A reminder children are to be in full school uniform (no PE kits) but they may choose to wear trainers if this is more comfortable for them. Please also remember to send a healthy packed lunch (no nuts), preferably in a disposable bag, a water bottle and a rainproof jacket.
