FROM OUR ACTING PRINCIPAL MS GARNEY
Many of you have been raking leaves, preparing for winter, and thinking about all our winter activities here in Alaska. Along with those and many other items, teachers will prepare for Parent Teacher Conferences on October 23rd and 24th. This time has been set aside so that your child’s teacher can share academic progress, goals, and concerns, and you will also have time to see your child’s work. Your participation is an important part of this process, and we are looking for 100% of our families to attend Parent/Teacher conferences. Our conference scheduler will be open on October 15th, visit our website to schedule a conference.
Parent/Teacher conferences are an opportunity for you to ask your child’s teacher questions. Following are a couple of questions you could use to get a dialogue started:
What are my child’s strengths and weaknesses? What are some examples of each strength or weakness?
What are some of the upcoming units the students will be studying, and how might we support these units from home?
Does my child speak up or ask questions during class, or in any of the classroom activities?
While you’re in the building during conferences, I hope you'll be able to stop by our PTA table. We would love to have as many families participate in the PTA this year as possible. Thank you to the families who have already signed up, it helps with all the activities and events we want to have this school year.
We are looking for noon duties and paraprofessionals, please apply online by following this link. Also, please check out our website for information about Baxter’s Title I plan.
Finally, if you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact us at 907-742-1750.
Thank you,
Chelsea Garney

PRACTICING MATH IN KINDERGARTEN
NURSE NEWS
As we all know, Alaskan winters present unique challenges for those walking or rolling on sidewalks or near roadways, and the darkness makes it difficult for drivers to see us. But did you know our clothing can make a big difference in how well we are seen? Someone wearing primarily black/blue clothing can only be seen 55 feet away when it is dark! However, a person wearing reflective materials can be seen up to 500 feet away.
This is why we have partnered with Center for Safe Alaskans to make reflective tape available to you. Each piece of tape can be cut into smaller pieces and placed strategically on outdoor gear, especially on parts that move.
We will be helping our students with applying special reflective tape to their backpacks and jackets -Ms. Meck and Nurse Emma

October 7 - October 11: Small-Sided Dribbling and Kicking games (3rd-5th) / Relationships with Objects/Others (K-2nd)
October 14 - October 18: Fitness Concept: Cardiorespiratory Endurance (K-5th)
October 21 - October 25: Small Sided Games* (3rd-5th) / Throwing (K-2nd)

* Parent/Teacher Conference Week
Reminder:
With the weather changing rapidly and winter boots on the horizon, please remember that students are required to wear gym shoes in P.E. class. We want to ensure the physical safety of all students in the class. Boots of any kind, slippers and Crocs are NOT gym shoes. Please have your child share their P.E. schedule with you so that they can full participate in P.E. class.
Afterschool P.E. Programs
We just concluded our afterschool Running Club with a successful Cross-Country Running Jamboree. On Thursday, September 26, Baxter had over 30 runners complete the .75-1.5 mile course at Bartlett High School. Our students had a beautiful rainbow to run under along with a little rain. The Baxter staff is extremely proud of all the work these students put in to prepare themselves for this event.
Our next afterschool activity will be Basketball for fourth and fifth graders. More information will be coming soon.
