It is hard to believe that we are starting the month of March. It was nice this past week to see a little preview of spring. The days are getting warmer and the sun is not setting so early in the evening. We are more than half-way through our school year and have a busy few months ahead of us preparing for FY26 and finishing our current year strong. March 1st marks the beginning of Women's History Month. We look forward to honoring women's contributions to American history.

This week we celebrate all things reading with Read Across America Spirit Week. Please see below for more information about our spirit days. We look forward to welcoming parents into the building to be guest readers throughout the week. Thank you for volunteering to read to our students!

Starting this month, our students will begin required state assessments. We need your help in ensuring that your students are present on testing days and get a good night's sleep. This week our 5th graders will have their MISA assessments on Tuesday, March 4th and Thursday, March 6th. In addition to testing, Wednesday, March 5th, we have an optional virtual parent information meeting for our 5th grade families about our FLHS curriculum at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 4th at 7:00 pm we will have our monthly virtual PTA meeting. Effective Monday March 3rd, bus route 4205 will be picking up the students that use bus route 5207 going to Lucy Barnsley ES. The change is for the morning only. The afternoon will remain the same with bus route 5207 dropping students off. The only thing changing would be the bus route number 4205 picking up students and taking them into Barnsley ES in the mornings. Please contact Mrs. Jablonski with any questions/concerns.

Online registration for kindergarten for the 2025-2026 school year opens on Monday, Feb. 3. Children who will be 5 years old by Sept. 1, 2025 are eligible to register. Registration will be online through the ParentVUE portal. If your family is new to MCPS, you will need to create a ParentVue account here. For more information about eligibility and the registration process, visit the MCPS Kindergarten Enrollment webpage or contact your local elementary school.

As the weather begins to get colder, please know we do go outside almost every day. We stay inside or go inside when weather does not allow for recess due to rain or temperatures and/or wind chill go below 30 degrees. Sometimes we may begin outdoors and shift to indoors if the weather changes. We try to go outside as often as possible. Please make sure your child is ready with the appropriate weather gear such as a coat, hat, and gloves.

We are excited to welcome volunteers to support our students! Please know to volunteers must complete the mandatory online voluntary training, sign in at the main office. Currently, we are providing opportunities for lunch support; however, we are working closely with our Instructional Leadership Team to develop a menu of items for each grade level where our parent volunteers can be more helpful. We will share this information as soon as it is finalized.

Spring Chess Club registration is now open! Chess Club will meet in the Art Room on Wednesday mornings starting on April 9, or Tuesday afternoons starting on March 11. Registration is first come, first served - please see the flyer for more information. (Please note, Winter Chess Club students will have makeup days on March 12 and 19, with a third makeup day of your choice during the spring session. More information will be sent by email this week.)
