Hermosa School Family Newsletter
January 6-10
Hornet Families,
Welcome back, Hermosa Hornets! We hope everyone had a fantastic holiday break and is ready for an exciting Spring semester. It’s great to see the halls buzzing with energy as we kick off 2025 together.
This week, we started the semester strong, reconnecting with friends and diving back into our learning routines. On Wednesday we had our annual vision screening where all students had the opportunity to ensure their eyesight is supporting their success in the classroom. Thank you to the health staff and volunteers who made the screening process smooth and efficient.
Below are a couple of important upcoming events to keep in mind:
Theater Troupe Practice
- When: Friday, 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM
- Where: Hermosa Music Room
Custer District School Board Meeting
- When: Monday, 6:00 PM
- Where: Custer Administrative Building
- This is a valuable opportunity for parents to stay informed and involved in the decisions affecting our schools. We encourage all who are able to attend.
As we look ahead, let’s stay focused, support one another, and make this semester one to remember. Here’s to a bright start in 2025!
IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE A HORNET!

Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Graveman
What a great week back! It is always great to hear how excited students are to return to school. We can all agree sleeping in is nice, but our students are happy to be back. As we begin the second half of the school year, we must remind ourselves of the expectations and set goals to finish our school year on a high note.
This week in counseling lessons we concluded our career unit with 4th and 5th grade as they discovered what career cluster they matched with, and explored the various careers associated with the different clusters. Next week in counseling lessons, 1st grade will complete their career packets exploring the various careers around us. The rest of the Elementary students will begin our Second Step curriculum and dive into the Empathy and Kindness Unit. Second Step is an evidence-based curriculum that builds students' emotional intelligence, empathy, and problem-solving skills. 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will take the Learning Style Quiz on South Dakota My Life and learn more about the three types of learning (Tactile, Auditory, and Visual) and how to help them learn best.

For January, our Character Counts is Responsibility. Character Counts defines Responsibility as:
Do what you are supposed to do. Try your best.
Preserve. Keep on trying.
Be self-disciplined.
Think before you act. Consider the consequences.
Be accountable for your words, actions, and attitudes.
