Monday Memo - November 11, 2024
Washburne Families,
We are heading into the final days of the first trimester and we look forward to welcoming parents to our building later this week!
Conferences this fall have shifted from October to November. To prepare for a conference experience that meets the needs of students and parents, in the spring of 2024 parents were invited to complete a feedback survey. Staff used the survey to update information related to the purpose of conferences.
Washburne’s conferences are this week on Thursday 11/14 and Friday 11/15. Our scheduling website will close TODAY at 3:00pm. If you have not already scheduled appointments, please do so prior to 3:00pm today.
You can access our scheduling website by clicking HERE.
We appreciate the opportunity to interact with families and wanted to follow up with a summary of our Washburne leader rounding session last month. Parents shared that this Monday Memo is a useful source of information, the transition to the Yondr pouches has been an excellent addition, and that communication from the school has provided them with the information they needed. Challenges Washburne will continue to focus on are helping our students with self-awareness, continuing to limit our use of acronyms and school terminology, and partnering with our students and families to help navigate changing social dynamics.
We look forward to more interactions throughout the school year and want to thank our families for partnering with us to make Washburne the best school it can be.
Take Care and Be Well,
Andrew Fenton & Ben Horwitz
Carleton Washburne Principal & Assistant Principal

C’est l’automne! 7th grade French students have been learning how to speak about their classes in French. In the activity pictured here, they needed to follow a class schedule in French with photo proof that they were in the right place. (The Art Room, The Computer Lab)
In 8th grade, French students are learning about shopping. In the pictured activity, they are inquiring about prices and writing down how much each person spends.

AI Literacy Lessons for Grades 5-8
November 13, 2024
9:30 A.M.
Location: Carleton Washburne School RC
UNESCO, in their 2021 report entitled AI and education: Guidance for policy-makers stated that:
- “AI is said to be a key enabler of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0)…A recent global estimate suggests that 30% of work activities could be automated by 2030. Up to 375 million workers worldwide could be affected...Meanwhile, however, AI and other frontier technologies are increasing the range of high-skill jobs that require unique creative and analytical abilities and human interactions. In short, many workers’ jobs might disappear, and they will need to develop new skill sets – upskilling or reskilling – to enable them to enter the new occupations made possible by AI. Education ministries and training providers need to anticipate these changes, equipping today’s workers and preparing new generations with the necessary technical and social job skills, to smooth the transition to a world dominated by AI, while ensuring social sustainability.”
Artificial Intelligence is “out of the toothpaste tube” and is not going back in. In response, we’ll share with parents the steps we’re taking to increase the literacy of our students of Artificial Intelligence and how we’re preparing them to be responsible users of this tool.
