RTS Parents' Newsletter
20 December 2024
Head Teacher's Message
This week's newsletter is a pure celebration of your wonderful children - our incredible students. It has been a fantastic Autumn Term: from our new cohort of 162 Year 7 students joining us in September and their team-building experience at Thames Young Mariners, to our Year 11 students heading out for their well earned reward experience ice skating at Hampton Court Palace - and everything in between!
We have also (finally) taken possession of our RTS Sports Building and are very much enjoying the new spaces and opportunities that it is offering us and we look forward to the completion of the renovation and resurfacing of the playground/MUGA areas.
The best use of the Sports Building took place this morning - a whole school, whole staff Celebration Assembly. This is the first time that we have been able to do this and it was just wonderful!
Congratulations to all students who won an award today, but especially to the following whose achievements were recognised with a Head Teacher's Award:
- Year 7 - Luca P
- Year 8 - Julia I
- Year 9 - Malaika R
- Year 10 - Yalcin G
- Year 11 - Joshua B
Well done also to the following students who won a Golden Ticket prize of a £50 voucher:
- Perrin S
- Eleanor S
- Phoebe D
- Coen M
- William O
- Cassim Z
Thank you to all of those families who joined us for our Christmas Concert last night - it was a lovely end to the term and a wonderful evening enjoying our talented students.
There is much more to look forward to in the Spring Term - but, for now, myself, the Senior Leadership, and our dedicated staff wish you and your families a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful break. Click on the video link to see many of us in our Christmas Jumper finery!
See you all again in 2025!

Autumn Term 2024
We love Christmas Lunch and Jumper Day here at RTS - it's a full 'all hands on deck' event. This year our Year 10 and 11 prefects were serving the rest of the year groups and they absolutely smashed it! Service was speedy and smiley! Staff from all departments were helping out wherever they were needed - whether it was extra hands in the kitchen, setting tables, seating children, manning the queue or on their usual duty spot - it was a fantastic team effort all round. A huge thank you to the kitchen team who, not only prepared Christmas Lunch for RTS, but also our neighbouring schools, Clarendon and Capella.
The Year 7 Silent Disco last week was a great hit (some of the staff managed to have a sneaky test run earlier in the week!)
Adding in glow sticks was such fun and really enhanced the dance mood!
This year group have made some firm friends this term and it has been wonderful to see them develop from strangers on the first day of term!
A group of Year 8 students achieved their Emergency First Response First Aid Certificates during their Enrichment sessions.
The Year 9 girls netball team had an excellent match against Turing House School at the beginning of the Autumn Term and won! It was a very close match throughout for the Year 10/11 team and they came away with a respectable draw. Well done to all teams involved.
Year 10 and Year 11 Spanish GCSE students headed off to Malaga in September to immerse themselves in the Spanish culture and language.
A throw back to an astronaut embroidered by Sienna, Year 9, during her Embroidery and Needlework enrichment.
Our incredible Performing Arts trip for Year 9, 10 and 11 students - some unforgettable moments including the Statue of Liberty, 9/11 Memorial, Broadway shows and improvisation sessions.
A trip to the National Army Museum for Year 9 proved informative.
Year 11 GCSE Geography students headed of to the Olympic Park, Stratford, to investigate its sustainability and environmental legacy.
A group of our students had a Gingerbread House building competition! It was close, but the winners were Sienna and Sophia in Year 9! Congratulations and enjoy deconstructing and eating them.
And we had to end with our new RTS Sports Building!

Applications for Zip Oyster photocards are now open
It is vital that children in Years 7 and 12 are aware that they may need to apply for a new Zip Oyster photocard. It has not been possible to apply for a new Zip Oyster photocard since September due to the recent cyber incident. During this time, children with an expired Zip Oyster photocard have been allowed to travel on TfL services.
Applications for all Oyster photocards are now open. If your child has an expired 5-10 or 11-15 Zip Oyster photocard you can now apply for a new Zip Oyster photocard.
Please apply as early as possible to ensure that you receive your new photocard before 31 December 2024. Expired photocards will not be accepted for travel on TfL or train operating company services from 1 January 2025. You can apply for a new photocard via our website.
The online application process only takes around ten minutes to complete, and you will need:
- A clear digital photo of your child
- Your child's valid machine-readable passport
- A debit or credit card to pay the £15 administration fee
If your child doesn't have a valid, machine-readable passport, start your application online and you will be prompted to download and print a letter to take to the Post Office to complete your application.
Once your child has received their new Zip Oyster photocard, they should start using it straight away.
Full details about the application process are available on our website.

ADHD Study Skills Hub for Students doing GCSEs and A-Levels
For many students, and especially those who experience challenges when it comes to the key executive functions required for exam preparation (planning and organising), this course will give the tools and support to succeed at what can be a very stressful time.
When is it? Three week course, once a week starting on the 29th January 2025 - 5pm-6pm for GCSE students and 6:15pm to 7:15pm for A-level students.
It will be run over three sessions of an hour each on Wednesday 29th January, Wednesday 5th February, Wednesday 12th February.
What is the objective: To support students in building self-esteem, confidence, and effective learning strategies as they prepare for GCSEs and A-Levels. It will cover:
Session 1: Discovering Your Values and Strengths
In this session, students will explore what drives them and identify their natural strengths. Developing self-awareness lays the foundation for greater confidence and resilience when facing challenging tasks.
Session 2: Mastering Revision Techniques
This practical session introduces strategies for effective exam preparation. Students will learn to create a versatile revision framework that applies to all subjects, offering a structured path through the study process.
Session 3: Identifying Motivation and Planning Ahead
Focused on motivation and mindset, this session encourages students to set goals and plan ahead. By deciding on key steps in advance, students will feel ready to begin their revision journey with confidence and a clear sense of direction.
