The Tiger Times
Week of October 13, 2024
Good Evening Ragsdale Families,
This is Noel Keener, the proud principal of Ragsdale High, with this week's updates.
Interim grade reports were sent out through Document Delivery on Wednesday, October 9th which means only three more weeks until the first quarter ends on November 1st. Please remember that quarter one is worth 40% of the final grade, and every assignment matters!
On Thursday, our 10th graders will be busy! They are taking the PreACT during 1st and 2nd block. The Pre-ACT is a great opportunity to practice for the ACT. The timing is similar and your Pre-ACT results will help you know how to best study for the ACT junior year. They will then enjoy a picnic lunch and a break before completing the YouScience Aptitude Assessment. The YouScience Aptitute test is required by the district, and it is designed to help students discover their natural aptitudes and connect them to careers that align with their interests. This assessment is a valuable tool for our students as they begin to explore their future career paths.
Friday, October 18 is a teacher workday for teachers, so there is no school. We WILL still have football at home, vs NWGHS that evening. We hope you enjoy your 3-day weekend!
We look forward to seeing you Monday at 8:55!
Thank you , have a great week, and, as always, TIGER PRIDE!

Athletics
Athletes of the Week
Ragsdale Athletics is thrilled to announce that this week’s Athletes of the Week are two outstanding young men from the men’s soccer team: sophomore Owen Justice and senior Jairo Ledezma. Their remarkable performances were instrumental in leading the team to two significant victories last week.
On Tuesday night, the Tigers achieved a resounding 4-1 win against Page, followed by an impressive 7-1 triumph over Southeast Guilford.
Owen Justice, a forward, has made headlines this fall with his exceptional skills on the field. This marks his second time being named Athlete of the Week this season. Owen showcased his talent with a stunning hat trick against Page and followed up with two goals in the match against Southeast Guilford.
Jairo Ledezma, the senior goalkeeper, has been a formidable presence throughout the season. His consistent performances have resulted in seven shutouts this year, demonstrating his prowess and dedication. Last week, he allowed only one goal in a fiercely competitive 4A Metro Conference.
Both Owen and Jairo exemplify the spirit and determination of Ragsdale Athletics, and we are proud to celebrate their achievements.

2024 Guilford County Cross Country Champion
A round of applause goes to Elle Dawson, a remarkable freshman, who triumphed at the 2024 Guilford County Championship in cross country on Wednesday, finishing with an impressive time of 18:05.
In a thrilling race, Dawson showcased her determination and skill, leading the pack and ultimately securing her victory. After the race, she expressed her gratitude and mindset going into the competition: “Honestly, I was just trying to do my best, I was trying to lead the race and come out near the top. I’m just grateful for the opportunity to be out there and to race on this course.”
Dawson’s victory not only marks a significant achievement in her athletic career but also ends Page’s Allie Kinlaw’s quest to become the second four-time winner of the GCS Championships, a title previously held by former Ragsdale standout, Sara Platek.
As a freshman, Dawson’s remarkable performance has solidified her place in the history of Guilford County cross country, and we look forward to seeing her continued success in future competitions.

Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon Week is October 23 – 31, 2024. GCS is using the theme “Be kind to your mind. Live Drug-Free.” again this year.
We support and enhance the health and safety of our students when we consistently share a clear message about the importance of healthy lifestyles (as well as the dangers of nicotine, alcohol, and other drug use).
Red Ribbon Week is an opportunity to begin conversations with our students and families about how to stay healthy and drug-free.
Sales Tax Referendum (repeat)
On November 5th, voters in Guilford County will consider a sales tax referendum. If the sales tax referendum passes, GCS will use the additional funding to recruit and retain effective teachers and increase compensation for frontline workers.
Sales Tax FAQs
Will the sales tax apply to all purchases?
- The sales tax would not affect essential items such as gas, groceries or prescription medication.
If the sales tax referendum passes, how much more will I pay?
- The proposed sales tax increase is 0.25% (a fraction of a penny). It will increase the sales tax in Guilford County from its current rate of 6.75% to 7%.
- The fraction of a penny tax amount would equal an additional five pennies on a $20 purchase. With tax, a $20 item would cost $21.40 instead of $21.35.
How much could the district expect to bring in from the sales tax increase?
- County government officials could see about $25 million per year in revenue.
- The referendum will distribute the cost of education to both visitors and residents alike.
How will the sales tax money be used?
- If the sales tax referendum passes, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners has committed to allocating the additional funding to increase compensation for teachers and frontline workers.
How will the sales tax money benefit frontline workers, including cafeteria workers, custodial staff, mechanics and bus drivers?
- If the sales tax referendum passes, it would help Guilford County Schools provide more competitive wages to frontline workers.
How does Guilford County’s sales tax compare to other area counties?
- Many surrounding counties, including Forsyth, Davidson, Randolph and Rockingham counties, already have a 7% sales tax. Wake and Mecklenburg counties are at 7.25%; Durham is at 7.5%.
How does Guilford County Schools’ pay scale for teachers compare to other area counties?
- Current teacher salaries in Guilford County are, on average, 35% lower than those in peer counties (Forsyth, Durham, Mecklenburg, and Wake).
