Attendance Matters - Our continued collective efforts - Update moving into May
ATTENDANCE UPDATE FOR MFS:
Dear Meadowbrook Families,
We're thrilled to share some exciting news about attendance at our school! Meadowbrook is now ranked #9 in the state based on the latest data! This achievement is a testament to the hard work of our students, teachers, and your continued support.
We're also writing to you about an important school improvement goal: improving student attendance. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us move in a positive direction this year.
Understanding Attendance & Chronic Truancy:
The state of Rhode Island tracks attendance closely, and we encourage you to view the public data for all schools here: https://www3.ride.ri.gov/attendance/public
- State Definition of Chronic Truancy: The state considers a student "chronically truant" if they miss 10% or more of the school days. For example, by the 100th day of school, missing 10 days (for any reason) would mean a student is considered chronically truant.
- Our School's Goal: We aim for students to miss no more than 5% of the school year. In a 180-day school year, this means no more than 9 absences total.
Why Attendance Matters:
Consistent attendance is crucial for your child's academic success. We've noticed that several Meadowbrook students have missed between 11 and 37 days this year, which unfortunately puts them in the category of chronic truancy according to the state's definition.
Our Approach:
We understand that illnesses and other legitimate reasons can cause absences. While the state doesn't differentiate between excused and unexcused absences when calculating chronic truancy, we do consider individual circumstances when analyzing our data. We want to work with you to support your child's attendance.
Rhode Island's Attendance Works Challenge:
The Rhode Island Department of Education is participating in the "Attendance Works" challenge to emphasize the importance of consistent attendance. You can learn more about this initiative here: https://www.attendanceworks.org/states-participating-in-the-50-challenge/
How You Can Help:
- Please prioritize regular school attendance.
- Communicate with the school about any absences, especially if they are prolonged.
- Obtain a doctor's note if/when documentation is needed to excuse an absence with the school.
- If your child is experiencing frequent absences due to illness or other concerns, please reach out to us so we can work together to find solutions. Usually our Nurse, Social Worker, Classroom Teacher and Dom will help you to create a plan of action for your family.
We value your partnership in ensuring all Meadowbrook students have the opportunity to succeed. Thank you for your continued support.
Reminder: Meadowbrook is still a peanut and tree nut free school.
This includes the cafeteria. If anything changes we will let you know.

From our School Nurse/Teacher:
At this time, Meadowbrook is a Peanut/Tree Nut FREE school - things may change as the school year progresses. We will let you know.
If your child requires medication during school hours, we must have a doctor's order that accompanies the medication. Medication should also be placed in a pharmacy bottle that is clearly labeled.
All families are REQUIRED to self screen students DAILY for COVID-19 symptoms.
If your child has any of the symptoms of COVID-19, please keep them home and reach out to the school nurse
If your child has symptoms please DO NOT provide them with symptom-reducing medication and send them to school. EX: Tylenol, Advil, Cough Medicine, etc.
Should you have any questions about your child's symptoms please contact your school nurse.
DO NOT ASSUME IT’S ALLERGIES OR A COLD, ASSUME IT’S COVID. Most allergy and cold symptoms overlap with COVID-19 symptoms therefore it is important to stay home and get tested to rule out COVID-19.
