Hastings Middle School 2024-2025
February 2, 2025
Dear HMS Families,
It has been a busy week at HMS! Our 8th grade students heard from UAHS about important scheduling information for next year. Our Ski Club enjoyed another evening of skiing fun. 8th grade students participated in job shadowing while the rest of us at the building learned about various careers around the country.
Next week, we celebrate National School Counseling Week, and I want to take a moment to recognize the incredible work of Tina Farbizo, Catherine Shapiro, and Kelly Dainton! These three go above and beyond every day to support our students, families, and staff making HMS a better place for all of us.
From organizing school socials and career day to helping in the cafeteria and teaching in classrooms, they truly do it all. Their dedication, compassion, and problem-solving skills make a difference in countless ways.
I encourage you to take a moment this week to show your appreciation—whether it’s a quick note, a kind word, or a small gesture of thanks. They are an exceptional team, and we are lucky to have them!
Have a great weekend!

Conferences
Conferences are on February 13th from 4:00pm - 7:30pm. Please know that our teachers will prioritize invitations based on the progress of our students. If you are not contacted for a conference, but would like to schedule one, please email your child's grade-level counselor.
IPRs
Due to our use of an online grade book, we no longer send home physical Interim Progress Reports. Instead, at the halfway point of each quarter teachers are asked to check their grade books to make sure they are up to date and to add a comment for any student earning a C or below at the time of IPRs. Please check PowerSchool on Tuesday, February 11th for updated grades and any necessary teacher comments.

House 7 Gold-Star House Service Project
The students and teachers of House 7 Gold are excited about their service project with the Star House. Beginning Monday, February 3 through February 14, we are collecting supplies for the Star House, a youth and young adult center that provides various services for homeless youth. We are collecting new socks, reusable water bottles, toiletries (toothpaste, shampoo, soap, etc..), new or gently used winter coats, rain ponchos, and jackets as well as new and gently used men's and women's clothing (for ages 14-24/sizes adult small and up). Students can bring the items in and drop them off in their classrooms.
Career Day
During career exploration time today, our seventh grade students had the opportunity to listen to a speaker, take a personalized strength inventory in our MAIA learning system (this replaced Naviance), discuss employability skills, hear about college choices and jobs/career training, and play a large group game similar to tell the truth.
Our speaker started the day by talking with students about how to turn personal skills and interests into a job; he stressed it may not be a full time career, but one can pursue personal interests and related jobs along their journey. He talked about employability skills and stressed the need to think about how you represent yourself when you are building contacts. The importance of hard work, kindness, and practicing social skills were key components of his message.
The day was focused on the variety of pathways people take when finding their careers rather than a couple specific careers. Students heard that often a career path involves multiple steps: part-time jobs, volunteering, training programs, courses/college, and self- reflection. These paths are linear for some people, and for others it can be a very windy path; we discussed that sometimes certain classes or experiences can help you determine which professions may not be a great fit as well as those that are a great fit. The game at the end of the exploration time involved students listening to part-time job/career descriptions. They heard about the job responsibilities and some specialized training needed for the jobs, and then voted on which staff members they thought had held that job before becoming an educator. We asked them to look for patterns and surprises. There were numerous aha moments (most of the staff members have held jobs in the community dealing with people- restaurants, retail, camp counselors, etc.) and laughter. Hopefully they will share additional details with you at home.

Washington DC Trip Information
Dates: May 13, 2025 - May 16, 2025
Website: www.studentadventures.org
Trip Code: HMS2514
Questions?: Cathy Johnson or Evie Lay
Students received Washington DC roommate selection cards on Thursday 1/30. Below are the guidelines for submitting roommate requests that students must follow:
Washington DC 2025 Roommates
Please deliver your roommate card to Mrs. Lay in room 103
Between 8:00 am Tuesday, February 4, and 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 5, 2024
Options:
1. Sign your name alone on the roommate card you will receive in Enrichment, then turn it in starting 2/4-2/5. This choice allows the trip coordinators to help create your room of four.
2. Sign your name on the roommate card, then get one of your friends to sign their name on your card. This choice allows two friends to be assigned to the same room along with another pair by your trip coordinators. (NOTE: a group of two friends should turn in only one card. The other blank card may be returned to Mrs. Lay or Mrs. Johnson).
3. Sign your name on the roommate card, and get three of your friends to sign their name on your card. This choice allows four friends to be assigned to the same room. (NOTE: a group of four friends should turn in only one card. The other blank cards may be returned to Mrs. Lay or Mrs. Johnson).
** If a scenario presents itself that the preferred pairing will not occur, contact will be made with the students and parents to discuss the situation.
**Only cards with one, two, or four names will be accepted. Rooms of four are created for the trip.
Counselor's Corner
Service Hours
Middle School students in Upper Arlington are asked to complete five hours of community service each year. If your child is volunteering anywhere this year or even just out shoveling a neighbor’s driveway (and not getting paid), those things count toward hours.
The information about community service and logging hours is on the Hastings website: https://hastings.uaschools.org/academic-program/community-service
We will be working with students to help them log hours later this month. Students should see their grade level counselor if they have questions.
Juvenile Law and Sexting 101
Each year at Hastings we partner with the Franklin County Prosecuting Office to come in and talk with our students about Juvenile Laws, Sexting Laws and Online Safety. This year, on February 18th 2024, the Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Irene Knapp will be joining us to talk with our students about these issues. Each grade level will listen to the presentation in school during their enrichment period. Please feel free to check out this flier that shares more about what will be discussed. If you have any questions and/or concerns about this presentation, please reach out to your grade level counselor.
The students will then have a follow up conversation on some of the topics covered during their advisory period on February 21st, 2025, to ensure that students have understood and absorbed the key content from the presentation.
If you want to opt your student out of the presentation, and the follow up conversation, please click here.
Counseling Intern
Mrs. Chloe Perry will be working on her counseling internship and practicum this spring and next year. At this time, Mrs. Perry will be primarily sitting in on meetings and observing, but as the semester progresses she will begin taking a more active role with students. (Her process is similar to that of a student teacher in a classroom.)
