Curriculum: Exciting, new innovative math programs for K-12 student success
We are committed to providing a rich, engaging, and effective educational experience that meets the diverse needs of our students. This school year, we will begin the adoption process for the math courses for our K-5 and 12th grade students. We look forward to sharing our findings with you. We are thrilled to announce an enhancement to our mathematics curriculum through the adoption and pilot of new math programs for our students in kindergarten through eleventh grade.
Amplify Desmos Math Pilot for K-5
We are excited to pilot Amplify Desmos Math for grades K-5. This innovative math curriculum combines interactive digital tools with hands-on activities to make math learning engaging and effective. The curriculum emphasizes deep conceptual understanding, helping students grasp the 'why' behind mathematical concepts. Lessons include interactive simulations and visualizations that make abstract math concepts tangible and easier to understand. Students engage in real-world problem-solving activities that show how math applies to everyday life.
Teacher Support: Teachers will receive training and ongoing support to implement this new curriculum and maximize its benefits for students.
Family Support: Amplify welcomes you and your learner to Amplify Math for the new school year. Amplify Desmos Math Caregiver Hub shares resources and helpful guides for enabling your student to have the most productive experience with the platform throughout the year. The hub also provides suggestions on how you can support math learning at home.
Amplify Desmos Math 6th Grade - Algebra I
This year, we have adopted Amplify Desmos Math for 6th grade through Algebra 1. This curriculum is designed to make mathematics engaging, interactive, and comprehensible for all students through digital learning with hands-on activities. Amplify Desmos Math offers a variety of interactive and visual tools that help students understand and explore mathematical concepts. Students use digital simulations and tools to visualize mathematical concepts and engage in collaborative problem-solving. The program includes features that allow for personalized learning paths, helping students progress at their own pace. Teachers can tailor instruction to meet the individual needs of each student.
The curriculum is designed to make abstract ideas tangible and accessible. The curriculum emphasizes deep conceptual understanding, ensuring that students not only learn how to perform mathematical operations but also understand the underlying principles. This approach helps students build a strong foundation for advanced mathematical studies. Lessons incorporate real-world scenarios and problems, showing students how mathematics applies to everyday life. This not only makes learning more relevant but also helps students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Teacher Support: Teachers will receive training and ongoing support to implement the curriculum. This includes access to resources and professional development opportunities.
Family Support: Amplify welcomes you and your learner to Amplify Desmos Math for the new school year. Amplify Desmos Math Family Hub 6- Alg I shares resources and helpful guides for enabling your student to have the most productive experience with the platform throughout the year.

K-4 Corner: Fall is here, students are engaged in learning
Sneak Peek Into Classrooms!
Fall is here! This is an exciting time as the weather changes with cooler temperatures and the leaves change colors! We have many things going on at the Annex! Take a look!
Speckles visits Lockland Elementary from the WAVE Foundation
Speckles the Penguin came out to visit with us on September 26th! The students and staff were so excited! And so were our Lockland Police Department friends! The kids sat on the floor, criss-cross applesauce with hands in their laps, while we learned all about Penguins! Speckles gets to decide if she wants to work each day, and lucky for us - she was eager to walk around and visit with us! We are so appreciative of this grant opportunity from the WAVE Foundation to bring Speckles out! We had so much fun!
Homecoming Spirit Week and Parade
It was an exciting week at the Annex!
Chef Pam
Chef Pam has been regularly visiting us to teach the kids about good nutrition. Chef Pam comes to us from The Ohio State University Extension, Hamilton County. During Chef Pam's recent visit, students made healthy sodas using cranberries, sparkling water, and moon grapes. It was very tasty! Staff members tried it too! They also learned about a cousin to broccoli named purple cauliflower. Students were able to taste both, with a side of ranch dressing, of course!
Hispanic Heritage Celebration
Hispanic Heritage Month is a yearly celebration held nationally from September 15th through October 15th. Here at Lockland Schools, we found ways to celebrate the rich culture of our Hispanic families. On Oct. 10th, the Annex hosted a special celebration. Our families brought in their favorite foods to share with everyone! Some of our students dressed in traditional garb! Mr. Strotman, our ELL teacher, and his students made a pinata filled with candy! Students had a great time taking turns trying to burst the pinata to get the goodies inside! The high school students brought flags and posters representing the countries they are from! The food was great! Everyone had a great time!
Attendance Competitions
The Attendance Competition is tough! Since the beginning of the school year, classes are showing attendance percentages of 90% or more! Well done, students and families! Below, see a couple of the pictures of the classes that have recently won the weekly award!
The pictures above are of Mrs. Lacewell's and Mrs. Mercuri’s students. The winners for the 1st quarter for the highest attendance percentage were tied! Mrs. McLaughlin's and Ms. Hulgin’s classrooms tied with 3 first-place wins each! Amazing! Each winning class is treated to a pizza party! Congratulations! The competition starts over for the 2nd quarter! May the best class win!
The Annex goes to Children’s Theater to see 'The Beauty and the Beast'
On October 18, 2024, every student in the district had the opportunity to attend The Beauty and the Beast! Both staff and students enjoyed the production!
Honor Roll Breakfast-Kindergarten and 1st grade
Students were recognized for making Honor Roll, Effort, Citizenship, and Perfect Attendance! We had a great time celebrating our students.
5-12 Corner: Great Start to the 2nd Quarter | Celebration of Hispanic Heritage
Happy November! We are off to a great start for the 2nd quarter. Please continue to check Progress Book weekly for grade updates and assignments.
The month of October was busy and presented many opportunities for enrichment and fun. On October 10th, these came together when Lockland High School hosted its annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration in the Annex building. It was a tremendous success.
Latino families representing Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Honduras joined in, bringing a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. Guests enjoyed traditional Latin American dishes like pozole, tacos, olla de carne, tamales, and empanadas, alongside refreshing horchata, ponche, beignets, and the classic tres leches dessert.
Amy McLaughlin’s class created posters on Guatemala, while Mr. Strotman’s class focused on Nicaragua, Honduras, and Mexico. The students also made a piñata, giving the younger kids a chance to have a blast. MariCris spun them around as they took turns hitting it, and when it finally burst open, candy and toys scattered all over the floor, sparking laughter and excitement.
This cherished event brings the Lockland community together in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month. We’re proud to share in the rich heritage, traditions, and joy of our Latino community, making memories that last a lifetime!

Soccer
The Lockland Panthers Soccer team has officially wrapped up its second season, and the players have improved greatly from last year, our first season. The Panthers ended the season 2-1-1 in the conference with an overall record of 2-8-1, putting us third in our conference and division.
A highlight from this season was our last game where we played Miami Valley. Last year, Lockland lost to Miami Valley 0-10. This year we tied with them and were up 1-0 for the majority of the game. After the game, the Miami Valley coach commented on how impressed he was with our team. He noted how much Lockland has grown and improved and said that he could see the hard work of practice paying off. This year, Lockland will be losing eight seniors, and all of them will be hard to replace and will be greatly missed. Coach Fischer: shannon.fischer@locklandschools.org
Volleyball
I wanted to take a moment and say thank you for a great first year with Lockland Volleyball. To our seniors, thank you for being great role models for our program. To our returning players, I can’t wait to continue to grow the volleyball program.

I'm looking forward to next season and seeing how our program continues to develop. Coach Tracey, twirtz19@yahoo.com, and Coach Sara.
Girls Basketball
The Lockland Lady Panthers basketball season is underway with the first official practice on October 25th. The program is starting out with 13 players and four managers. That's a 100% increase in players from last season. Additionally, the program is working hard to add a middle school team this season as well. The team's first scrimmage is at Aiken on Saturday, November 9 and their first game is at Reading on November 22. For the first time in five years the team will be led by upperclassmen that includes three seniors and three juniors. Four of the five starters return from last season including the team's top three leading scorers.

Lockland students break records at Next Engineers Discovery event
Lockland Schools students recently shined during the annual Next Engineers Discovery event, held in partnership with GE Aerospace, on the main campus. A record-breaking 103 students were engaged in this unique learning event.
With a special focus on empowering youth to explore the world of engineering, Lockland students showcased their creativity and skills.
"We LOVE this program. They have been coming to my class twice a year for the last four years. Our kids smash other schools' records every time," said Lockland Teacher Melissa Schowalter,
This year's event featured a special guest, Balazs Meszaros, who joined the Cincinnati volunteer team all the way from Hungary. Despite being in the U.S. for a brief visit, Balazs took time to contribute. With 13 GE Aerospace volunteers dedicating a total of 14 hours, students were able to create innovative designs that set a new standard for the program.
Chad Ross, GE Aerospace's Technical Product Manager, extended his heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who made the event a success, especially Balazs for his international support.
The Next Engineers program at Lockland presents students an opportunity to engage in STEM fields and is an example of a successful school/business partnership between Lockland Schools and GE Aerospace.
We are thankful to GE Aerospace and the individuals who invest their time to equip, engage and motivate our students, Superintendent Bob Longworth said.
