EVERYONE LEARNING, EVERYONE LEADING
Dear Longacre Families,
We hope you had a wonderful mid-winter break! We are excited to welcome the students back tomorrow. Thursday will be an especially exciting day as we celebrate our Legacy Review day and the reveal of this year’s One School One Book title!
To kick off March Reading Month, One School One Book presents an exciting shared reading experience for our entire school community. On Thursday, each family will receive a copy of the book, along with details about the fun plans we’ve created to make this reading journey enjoyable for everyone. The Farmington Community Library is also hosting a One School One Book kickoff event on Thursday, February 27th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Please see the flyer below for more information.
Research shows that reading aloud to children has many positive effects on their reading development. Not only does it model fluency and help with decoding challenging words, but it also fosters critical thinking. This essential skill is developed through conversations and experiences, allowing children to think deeply about a topic or book. Even if your child is capable of reading independently, reading together remains just as important as it was when they were younger.
Family read-alouds of chapter books are a great way to delve into the story. You can ask thoughtful questions about the plot, explore the meanings of more complex vocabulary, discuss the overall message, and even make predictions about what might happen next. These conversations will help your child develop critical thinking skills that will serve them for a lifetime.
We look forward to celebrating March Reading Month with your family!
As always, feel free to contact me or the main office at 248-489-3733 if you have any questions.
With Longacre Pride,
Rhonda Henry, Principal
