On Monday, March 18th, both teams bussed over to Jay Peak for a day of skiing. Various staff members shared the photos they took of the day.

Last week, students from teams Discovery, Incredibles, Triumph and Voyagers took part in two class periods of instruction testing the effect of carbon dioxide on our planet's warming using a two-earth's model. Guest teacher, Alex Levin from VEEP (Vermont Energy Education Program) set up eight stations in the library with heat lamps and pairs of rock-filled containers and thermometers. The goal was to compare temperatures in each of the containers over time with the heat lamps shining down on them. One contained a large amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere at the top of the container and the other did not.

All groups tried their best to take exactly the same steps for the experiment. They all started at the same time. They created the same amount of carbon dioxide using 100 ml of water and seven tablets of alkaseltzer.

Temperatures were recorded for each container once every minute over a time period of eight minutes.

Students noted that temperatures rose more quickly, and to higher degrees, in the containers with carbon dioxide. This finding occurred in every paired earth system across all groups. It appeared that the carbon dioxide generated by the alkaseltzer had pooled above one of the containers in each two-earth earth model, trapping heat below their container's tiny atmospheres. This experiment showed how an excess of a greenhouse gas, like carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere, can lead to a warmer planet.

Hands-on science learning will continue to be offered at these and other grade levels in the years to come. VEEP has laboratory kits for instruction on electricity, wind power, hydro-electric power, methane production, solar cooking and much more.

The STEAM and Makerspace Team in collaboration with teachers, and the ECHO Science Center, Montshire Science Museum, and many volunteers are excited to bring you a family evening event– our very own second annual St Albans City School STEAM Festival! Save the date and prepare for an evening of creativity and fun as we design,make and build together! Details: Stations will be set up throughout the school with amazing opportunities to build and create. A giant windwall, an airplane launcher, a giant planetarium, cardboard construction, circuits, laser cutting, spin art, photo booth, robotics, and so much more! Attendees will have opportunities to create things to take home and enter raffles to win great STEAM activities to continue the fun together beyond the event.

All are welcome, and no sign up is needed, but if you have questions please contact Darcie Rankin, STEAM Educator at drankin@maplerun.org.

We hope you will join us at the STEAM Festival on April 2nd from 5:30 - 7:30pm. We will have a giant cardboard station. Working together you will be challenged to build a chair that your teachers can sit in!
