Hello, Surfside families!

It was a lot of fun greeting many of you at our registration events and we are excited to have your students back on campus. If you are new to Surfside, we welcome you. If you are returning, then welcome back! You may have noticed that our campus is under construction. This is exciting as we expect to have a brand new, beautiful school just under two years from now. In the meantime, please excuse the dust.

We are looking forward to supporting your student through a successful year. To help with this effort, please take a moment and remind your student about the keys to success:

• Show up to school
• Complete all assignments
• Ask questions when needed
• Keep devices, like cell phones, stored during class time

Also, it is important to note that one of the biggest detriments to success is absenteeism. Even just 2-3 days per month amounts to 135 hours of missed instruction...that is a BIG number!

Please know that the Surfside staff will continuously work to build your students' academic ability, strive to create a welcoming environment, and help your student navigate challenges to the best of our capacity. We are excited to partner with you in these endeavors. Towards this end, please contact us should you have any questions or would like to converse at any time during the year, we'd love to meet you.

Finally, please take note of the Shark Bites newsletter every week. There will be important dates of events listed as well as informational items to keep you updated.

Make sure to get your new school devices from the school library. Insurance is only $20.

The safety of our students is of critical importance to all of us and we want to protect them from injury. Even so, accidents do happen (at school and elsewhere) and required medical care can be expensive. Please know that Surfside does not assume responsibility for such costs but does offer you access to several student accident insurance plans for voluntary purchase. As a reminder, OUSD provides Tutor.com for FREE to all students! Every OUSD student can access Tutor.com at no-cost with 1-to-1 online tutoring in English and Spanish. Students also have access to use drop-off writing review, self-paced test prep from The Princeton Review®, as well as other learning resources. Students can access Tutor.com 24hrs a day every day of the year, except Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Emails, text messages and phone calls from OUSD including those from your principal, teacher and the district office will be directly sent to you using the email address and phone number you provided in Aeries during data confirmation. It’s important that all the emergency contacts listed in Aeries have updated contact information so everyone can receive important messages from OUSD.

You no longer need to download any third party apps to receive messages from your school.
