Neighboring Academy Gives Back at Local Food Banks
Cupboard at Calvary
Several Neighboring Academy students from both Cohort 1 and Cohort 2 volunteered to help with the Food Pantry at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Harrisburg Thursday, January 11th in the evening. The food pantry is provided to the local community twice a month, every second and fourth Thursday. The program is called the Cupboard at Calvary and serves those who live in the service area, which is defined as the 17109, 17111, and 17112 zip codes. More information is provided at https://www.calvaryhbg.org/pages/cupboard-at-calvary.
Food Bank Distribution for Seniors
The Neighboring Academy Cohort 1 supports the Central PA Food Bank distribution for our senior citizens held monthly at various locations in Dauphin County. Cohort 1 regularly supports the effort for the Linden Terrace apartments every third Thursday, by delivering the food boxes directly to the residents.
Middletown VFW Distribution for Service Members
The Neighboring Academy Cohort 1 supports the ongoing food bank distribution effort being held at the Middletown VFW, in conjunction with the organization Blacks in Government (BIG) who manages the program. This event is held monthly on the first Friday of each month at the Middletown VFW. The program is part of MilitaryShare, a Fresh Express Program of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank designed to provide fresh, nutritious foods for families. This includes all military branches, prior service, reservist, or inactive ready reserve. There are four distribution locations in Dauphin County. The BIG program also supports a local pet food distribution for our service member’s pets.
5th Grade Students Perform Reader's Theatre
Before winter break, 5th grade performed Readers’ Theaters to practice their reading fluency and accuracy skills. According to ReadingRockets.org, "Reader’s theater is a collaborative strategy for developing oral reading fluency through reading parts in scripts. Students do not need to memorize their part but they will reread the script several times to build familiarity with the language and practice appropriate expression. The best reader’s theater scripts include lots of dialogue!"
Farm Show Week Fun
On Friday, January 12th, Ms. Esposito’s and Ms. Pugh class took a field trip to the 108th Pennsylvania Farm Show. In preparation for their field trip, they learned about cows and sheep. On Tuesday they learned about the process of butter making and that the milk that makes butter comes from cows. Students then engaged in an activity in which they made their own butter. On Thursday, they learned about sheep and that their wool is used to make clothing and rugs. To go along with this lesson of sheep, students made looms with yarn. A great time was had by all!

Staff Spotlight- Meet Ms. Kinnarney
I am the District Social Worker for the Steelton-Highspire School District, starting in this role in the 2017-2018 school year. I received my bachelor’s degree in social work from Shippensburg University and then my Masters degree in Social Work from Widener University. I became a Licensed Social Worker in 2015.
Prior to coming to the Steelton-Highspire School District, I worked at Dauphin County Children and Youth as a caseworker and then became the Educational Liaison for Dauphin County. Being the Educational Liaison for Dauphin County allowed me to build connections and network with school districts which ultimately led me to my position here at the Steelton-Highspire School District.
I am currently attending Kutztown University and hoping to graduate with my doctorate this upcoming spring. I am currently doing a research study on the perceptions and practices of school social workers conducting home visits for school districts.
I enjoy my time with our families of the school district and hope to be the needed support to students, their families, and staff.
