DAYS OF THE CYCLE
Mon. Day 3, Tues. Day 4, Wed. Day 5, Thurs. Day 6, Fri. Day 2
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“In fifth place is the only mythical creature on the calendar, the dragon. A kinder creature than legend suggests, it didn’t hesitate to divert from the race to extinguish a fire which was endangering the lives of some nearby villagers. Once it got back on course, it saw the rabbit struggling and used its breath to blow it safely to shore.
The rabbit never learned who came to its aid while the dragon was content to finish behind it.”
How the Creatures in the Chinese Zodiac Found Their Place - BBC
A Note from the Principal
As part of the legend of the Chinese Zodiac animals, it is said that the Jade Emperor lined up all of the animals for a competitive race, declaring that the order the animals finished was to become the order of the lunar calendar. There could only be twelve winners and in order to win, the animals had to cross a rapid current river and reach the finish line on the shore. The dragon, thought to be the most powerful, was expected to win, but instead came in fifth place. When asked by the Emperor why the dragon did not use its powers to fly, it said that it chose to stop along the way to help others. From that legend, the dragon has become a symbol of an even more meaningful form of power- the power of service.
The celebration of the Lunar New Year, and the welcoming of the Year of the Dragon, strikes me as the appropriate moment to lift up the attributes our community has in common with this noble, mythical creature. Day Dragons reach the finish line together, as one. We finish together or not at all. We all bring different strengths, different viewpoints and perspectives, and we are stronger together. We have shown this in every moment of challenge and crisis; it is how we show up for our students and for each other, and I continue to be so very proud to serve this incredible community with all of you.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH
This week we also launch the beginning of Black History month. In our classrooms and shared spaces we will be lifting up the voices of black leaders in all fields whose accomplishments have been marginalized by the inequities and injustice throughout our history, but who stand as role models for our young scholars. At Day, our celebration of black history is not relegated to just one month of the year, but rather woven through our curriculum and our shared work. And yet, there is work to be done...
Part of that work is engaging our students in reflections on their own identities and biases that lead to marginalizing voices that are not in a majority. Through advisory lessons and our community day on, we will continue to engage in dialogue around how we interact with each other, particularly around race. The work toward becoming a just, anti-racist community continues.
