Our Week of Learning
This week we had a social skills lesson with Ms. Ftorek. She taught us about being a sweet friend vs. a sour friend. The students wrote about how to be a sweet friend.
Math
- We began topic 1 of our math curriculum this week.
- We practiced counting groups or objects and writing an addition sentence to match.
- We also practiced drawing a model to represent a given addition sentence.
Reader's Workshop
- This week, we learned that readers have good habits - things they do every time they read to get better and better!
- Reading partners worked together to practice taking a "sneak peek" through their books before reading. The students are working on asking questions (I wonder...) and making predictions (I predict...) before reading to develop deeper understanding.
- You can practice this with your child at home! Before reading with them, ask them to make predictions about the story based on the title and cover page.
Writer's Workshop
- We continued to work on writing personal narrative stories this week.
- After completing our brainstorming for story ideas, the students selected one story to move forward with writing.
- This week, we worked on planning our story across multiple pages. Students verbally told their story with a writing partner using "first, next, then, last" language, then completed a planning page to sketch their thinking.
- We also talked about drawing detailed and neat pictures to match our stories. We are working on drawing pictures with lots of detail and colors and without scribbling.
Fundations
- We continued working on unit 1 of Fundations, which is a review of Kindergarten fundations skills. We are practicing letter formation of lowercase letters from a-z.
- This week, we specifically focused on letter formation for the letters d,s,e,u,l,h,k,p,j,v,w,z,q
Science
- We learned about apples this week! Our poem of the week was about apples. We read The Biggest Apple Ever. We learned about the life cycle of an apple. Students created an apple life cycle craft.
