There's always time for a good book!
WELCOME TO THE LIBRARY
The Harlan Elementary Library/Media Center is the place to be for reading, research and inquiry, technology, digital citizenship, creativity and exploration! This Library Connection newsletter will provide you with information about learning in the library, recommended resources available to students in school and at home, special events, book recommendations, and more! Please also check out our Harlan Elementary website for more information and resources. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you have!
Library Policies/Procedures
#Items to be checked out:
Jk and Kdg = up to 2 items (after the first month of school)
1st grade = 3 items
2nd - 5th = up to 5 items
Books are allowed out for 2 weeks before an overdue notice will be generated. If you need more time than two weeks please ask for them to be renewed.
If books are lost or damaged students must pay for books to be replaced. This is to make sure our library collection is up to date and everyone has access to their favorite books.
Fines can be paid for by check (made payable to Birmingham Public Schools and in the memo line write Harlan Library) or cash. Please address the envelope to Mrs. Coleman.
What are your students working on in September?
- Building classroom community and relationships
- Library classroom expectations
- Understanding the layout of the library
- Learning how to checkout books
- Book Care/Parts of Books/Differences between Fiction and Non-Fiction
- Computer lab expectations and how to navigate our school website
Students in 3-5 currently attend Library at a fixed time for checkout only. However, they will attend library lessons throughout the year. They will be working on the following:
- Building classroom community and relationships
- Library classroom expectations
- Understanding the layout of the library
- Learning how to checkout books and how to place items on hold
- Computer lab expectations and how to navigate our school website
- Learning about available databases
