Celebrations in the World
Ramadan
For those celebrating Ramadan, Ramadan Mubarak!
Ramadan is February 28- March 29. This is a sacred month for Muslims around the world and a time of reflection, prayer, and fasting.
The lunar cycle of Ramadan begins with the sighting of the new moon, which marks the start of the month. This sighting is traditionally done by human observers, looking to the skies to catch a glimpse of the slender crescent moon after sunset. Once the new moon is sighted, the fasting period of Ramadan begins the next day.
The lunar cycle continues throughout Ramadan, with each night bringing changes to the appearance of the moon. As the days progress, the moon waxes, growing larger and brighter in the night sky. This progression symbolizes the journey of the month, a time of spiritual growth, self-reflection, and increased devotion.
Finally, the end of Ramadan is marked by the sighting of the new moon once again. This signals the arrival of Eid al-Fitr, a joyous celebration that brings the fasting period to a close. Eid al-Fitr is a time of feasting, giving thanks, and sharing with those less fortunate.
Lent
For those celebrating Lent, may you have a blessed Lenten season!
Lent is a significant season in the Christian calendar, observed by many denominations, including Catholics and Protestants. It lasts for 40 days and begins on Ash Wednesday, leading up to Easter Sunday. Lent is celebrated by prayer, fasting, and acts of charity, reflecting Jesus' time of fasting in the wilderness. Many people give up certain foods or habits as a form of spiritual discipline, while others focus on doing good deeds. Lent is a time of reflection, renewal, and preparation for Easter.
