The SMS SCOOP!
Newsletter April/May/June 2025
SMS - from the Principal
Dear SMS Families,
As we wrap up another incredible school year, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to our students, staff, and families who have worked together to make this year a success. From academic achievements to extracurricular triumphs, our students have demonstrated resilience and growth every step of the way.
As we enter the final months of the school year, our 6th and 7th-grade students will be completing the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP) in April and May. This standardized online assessment measures student progress in core subject areas and helps us identify our strengths and areas for improvement. We encourage students to come well-rested, eat a healthy breakfast, and put forth their best effort.
Finally, we are grateful to end our year by celebrating with the 6th Grade Wolf Day and the 7th Grade class trip to C.J. Barrymore’s! These events will give our students a well-earned opportunity to have fun and make lasting memories with their classmates. Stay tuned for more details as we get closer to these exciting celebrations.
Thank you for your continued support in making our school a place where students learn, grow, and thrive. Wishing everyone a wonderful spring and a strong finish to the school year!
Warm regards,
Liz Walker
Principal

Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP)
M-STEP Assessments!
All SMS students will be participating in the Michigan Summative Test of Educational Progress, M-STEP, in April and May. This annual assessment is mandated for all Michigan public schools and is one of the tools used to measure a student's proficiency in specific subject areas. The M-STEP is an online assessment and is based on the Michigan Academic Standards.
Parents can help their children do well on the M-STEP in many ways. Please make sure your children have a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast. Sending them to school with healthy snacks and bottled water can help them recharge their batteries. Encourage them to do their best work, but be careful not to add to their stress level if they are anxious about the tests. These are just some suggestions for daily success; they can be even more important during test time. Parent information from the Michigan Department of Education can be found on the following link: What Parents Should Know About Assessments.
The state sets the dates that every school district must administer each assessment, so please make sure your children are in attendance and on time for test-taking days. Please try to avoid pulling students out of class during the testing window. We cannot vary from these windows. The dates of the SMS M-Step administration are as follows:
The week of April 21st, 6th-grade students will be taking the Language Arts M-STEP in their Language Art classes.*
The week of April 28th, 6th-grade students will be taking the Math M-STEP in their Math classes.
The week of May 5th, 7th-grade students will be taking the Language Arts M-Step in their Language Art classes.*
The week of May 12th, 7th-grade students will be taking the Math M-STEP in their Math classes.
*A segment of the Language Arts test requires students to listen to audio. We are supplying students with headphones to use during the Language Arts test, but encourage students to bring in their own headphones to use during the test. Bluetooth headphones are not allowed during testing. Students must keep cell phones and smart watches in their lockers as they are prohibited during testing.
Students should charge their Chromebooks at home and bring them each day for M-STEP testing fully charged.
If you have any questions about the M-STEP, please contact Amy Wade-Tiffner, amwadetiffner@clarkston.k12.mi.us, the SMS building test coordinator.
Thank you for your help in preparing your child for the M-STEP and ensuring consistent attendance for testing.
Band, Orchestra and Choir NEWS!
District Festival
Congratulations to ALL SMS Bands, Choirs, and Orchestras for receiving Superior ratings at their district festivals this month! Festival is a performance based evaluation where groups perform a set of pieces for a panel of judges and receive grades in various categories. Groups also "sight read" a piece of music on site that they have never read before and are also evaluated in the same categories. These grades average out to a final rating, with Superior being the highest grade with an average score of "A"s. Congratulations to the hundreds of SMS students who participated!

PTO - from the President
Dear SMS Families,
It’s hard to believe how quickly this school year is flying by! As we head into spring, I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for your generosity—whether through time, donations, or participation in our fundraisers, your support has made a huge impact at SMS.
Here’s a look at what we’ve been able to accomplish thanks to YOU:
- We provided dinner for our hardworking teachers and staff during Parent/Teacher Conferences.
- We partnered with local businesses for successful fundraisers at Hungry Howie’s, Mr. B’s, QDOBA, and Tropical Smoothie—a huge shoutout to these businesses for supporting our school!
- Our final Skate Night was a total success! Thank you to Student Leadership for choosing the Sports & Neon theme—it was SO much fun. We look forward to bringing them back next school year!
- We funded supplies for 7th Grade Social Studies, helping students create Models of the Ancient World with modeling clay.
- Upcoming Fundraiser! Join us at Pita Way on Sashabaw on April 23rd from 4–9 PM—another easy & delicious way to support SMS!

Student Council and Leadership
Student Council
Our SMS Student Council did an amazing job with our Penny Wars competition earlier in the 2025 year, raising over $500 for the Grace Centers of Hope. We were so happy to see the students battling it out for a great cause. We have just wrapped up our last event of the year, the Cereal Box Domino Event. Students donated over 300 cereal boxes for Gleaners Food Bank! Congratulations to Ms. Barr's PAWS class for bringing in the most cereal boxes. After our Student Council set up the domino effect, Ms. Barr's class was able to knock it down and watch the effect happen in real time (see the video clip below)! Our SMS Student Council did an incredible job this year representing their grades and bringing great ideas/events to the group!
Leadership
The Quarter 3 Leadership group dedicated their time developing their team building and leader skills. Through various activities, this group worked hard to become stronger leaders in all aspects of their lives. Due to the snow days, we didn't get a chance to do some of the activities we had planned, so the students spent most of their time supporting our March's Reading Month activities. They created a wonderful display case to promote how reading allows thoughts and ideas to "come to life," they created a bookmark for each student to have when they are on their next reading adventure, and helped support our PAWS committee with their PAWS Lessons revolving around March's Reading Month. Our Quarter 4 Leadership students will work on developing their team and leadership skills through our staff coffee bar!
