AI usage in the classroom
As Artificial Intelligence becomes an increasingly important aspect in our daily lives, Onslow Early College High School will be the first school in our district (and state) to train students in the appropriate and productive usage of Microsoft CoPilot and MagicSchool. Permission slips went home with all 9th and 10th graders on Friday for parents to review. Please send those signed permission slips back in, whether you elect to give or deny permission to learn and use these two AI tools.

Senior Seminar and EPF Honors- Seniors should be getting close to clicking the submit button on their applications (if they have not done so already!)
We looked at economic indicators and the factors of production during the past two EPF classes. Quite a few seniors have yet to turn in assignments from last week (three articles/questions and quickwrite). Those need to be completed for partial credit!
I have meetings on Monday and Tuesday, so we will only have Senior Seminar/EPF on Wednesday and Thursday! We will work on scheduling for our final semester of CCCC classes Wednesday/Thursday.
Class of 2026
Junior Seminar-Juniors that have not completed their NoRedInk or math practice exam need to get caught up by Wednesday/Thursday seminar!
I have meetings on Monday and Tuesday, so we will only have Junior Seminar on Wednesday and Thursday! We will go over our math practice work on scheduling our CCCC Spring 2025 semester.

English III Honors (Ms. Meyer)-This week we began our study of Henry James’ novella, The Turn of the Screw. To begin this section, students conducted a mini research assignment on the Victorian Era and presented their findings to the class. We also examined the elements of suspense in writing and put them into practice with writing an original short story utilizing these elements. Students were also assigned a specified role in a roundtable discussion on The Turn of the Screw. This was a small group discussion in which each student was responsible for a particular role. To finish the week, students were also assigned a group presentation on a specific aspect of Victorian society. This will be presented on Tuesday, October 1. Students should continue working on their Annotated Bibliography/Literature Review. Checkpoint 2 for this assignment is due next Thursday, Oct. 3 and the final draft is due Friday Oct. 18. More information on this can be found on the class OneNote page. 🍂

Driving Permits, Licenses, and GPAs
"North Carolina House Bill 769 became effective December 1, 1997 and reflects a coordinated statewide effort to motivate and encourage students to complete high school. This legislation requires that a student's driving permit or license be revoked if a student is unable to maintain adequate progress or drops out of school. Adequate progress is defined as passing 70% of all courses and is determined by first semester grades and second semester grades for schools on block scheduling. For schools on a traditional six-period day schedule, grades are determined by first semester grades and end-of-year grades."
Students need to maintain "adequate progress" to remain eligible for permits and licenses while in high school. Each semester, we are to notify students (and the district) when any students are not making adequate progress at the end of a semester/year. Students will then have to earn back the ability to have a permit or license after the next semester's grades are complete (and pay $50 to the DMV to have their permit or license reinstated). Bottom line: Keep your grades up in your high school and college classes or you will lose your driver's permit or license!
