🗓️ March Dates of Significance 🗓️
March 21st
Two Spirit and Indigenous LGBTQQIA+ Awareness
Advocated by the Two-Spirit community and created in partnership with the Two-Spirit Program at the Community-Based Research Centre of Vancouver, March 21st celebrates diverse identities and roles that have existed in Indigenous communities since time immemorial.
March 22nd
World Water Day
One water advisory can mean that up to 5,000 people lack access to clean, safe, drinking water. Access to clean drinking water is a human right. On World Water Day, March 22, we are all called to advocate for this right and to reflect on our relationships with water.
March 31st
National Indigenous Languages Day
On this day we celebrate Indigenous language warriors and learners across Turtle Island. This day is also an opportunity to learn about Indigenous languages. Check out this video on five things you can do to support Indigenous language revitalization here.
📌 What's Happening in Indigenous Education at the LDSB?📌
Basket Making with Carol Ann Maracle
The Indigenous Student Leadership Circle had the opportunity to learn how to make a small black ash basket with Carol Ann Maracle, a basket maker from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.
Boil Alert Film Screening
In collaboration with the Kingston Canadian Film Festival (KCFF), students in the Understanding Contemporary First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Voices (NBE) class had the opportunity to attend a film screening of Boil Alert. This opportunity was accompanied by a Question and Answer period with Indigenous activist, Layla Staats.
Honouring the Gifts of the Land
In collaboration with the ReconciliACTION student-led group at Bayridge Secondary School, we facilitated an Honouring the Gifts of the Land day. This day included learning about loom beading, plants and the gifts that they bring, and maple teachings. We were joined by Indigenous community members Mandy Wilson and Melanie Gray.
Loom Beading
Jessi (Elementary Indigenous Student Support and Engagement Teacher) visited Ms. Carlone's class at Rideau Public School to teach about wampum belts and their significance. Following this learning, students had the opportunity to learn about the beading technique used to create wampum belts, loom beading. Everyone made their own loom beaded piece, influenced by their own cultures, background, and interests!
