PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Parents,
As you’ve heard me say before, unstructured play is very important for students. At Atkinson, our limited recess duty staff work very hard to provide students with an unstructured time to play with peers. Before winter break, some of the duty staff had been noticing some unsafe situations happening during 3rd-5th grade recess. To create safety without structuring students’ play, they set up zones where students could play ball sports and zones for other activities. One of the goals was to provide safe spaces where students who don’t want to play ball sports don’t have to worry about being hit with balls. We know that even small hits on the head with balls at an early age can make students more vulnerable to concussions.
When we shared the new zones with students after winter break, we got very mixed reactions. Some students were very thankful while some students were very frustrated by the zones. We want you to know that we take students' perspectives seriously, especially at recess. Earlier this week, the student leadership team met and created a survey for 3rd-5th grade students. We will be administering it next week during library time. The student leadership team will review results and come up with alternative solutions. You can help by discussing this with your student and reviewing the following:
Safety is the first priority and the staff takes this responsibility seriously.
We need all student voices to be heard.
The staff at Atkinson listens to them.
When we don’t like something, we make workable suggestions for improvement (students will be asked to make suggestions in the survey).
It is okay to disagree with another student. We can disagree and still listen and work towards mutually acceptable solutions.
We thank you for your support and partnership as we take advantage of this great opportunity to listen and learn together.
