Westside Unified Float in the Homecoming Parade

We are excited to announce the first Unified Activity of the year. Westside's annual Homecoming Parade is Wednesday, September 25th with the theme of Circus. We hope you will consider joining us to march or ride. Our current plan is to develop a small float. There will be a limited amount of seating available with Unified Participants walking behind and along side partners and families.

On Monday, September 23rd, we will gather at Rockbrook Elementary to help design and decorate the trailer. We'd like to invite families for some fun that evening from 5:30pm - 7:00pm to put together our Circus Float, decorate a t-shirt to show your support for Westside Unified, an opportunity to learn the song "This is Me" in sign language, and help decorate shirts and make posters to explain what Unified and Inclusion mean.

If the kids get a little wiggly they are welcome to play on the playground weather permitting.

If your child is interested in attending please RSVP on the linked google form as soon as possible. Students may participate even if they will not attend the parade, but of course we would love to have them be a part of both.

Note: We would like all students to be accompanied by an adult.

Even if your child did not participate in float design, they are welcome to join us for the parade.

Please also RSVP if your child would like to be part of the parade.

(If your child will participate in both you will need to complete the form twice. This helps us know how many to expect at each event and to see positive peer partner students.)

What Are Unified Activities?

The Special Olympics Unified Schools Program is a fast-growing initiative that brings students with and without intellectual disabilities together.

As Unified Champion Schools, we partner with Special Olympics Nebraska to implement a three-component strategy focused on Inclusive Sports, Inclusive Youth Leadership, and Whole-School Engagement. These three components bring students with and without intellectual disabilities together to promote a positive school climate, develop physical fitness, prevent bullying, enhance student engagement, and promote student leadership skills.
